MATCHING UP:
San Jose State has competed just once this season, finishing with a 193.825 against Sacramento State on Jan. 12; Madison Gustitus won the floor event title with a 9.800 while Jaudai Lopes won the all-around with a 38.700. The Spartans are led by former Washington head coach Joanne Bowers, who was the 2007 Pac-12 Coach of the Year and produced three NCAA regional individual champions and seven event / all-around finalists across six NCAA championship meets during her time in Montlake.
The Spartan beam lineup enters Friday's competition ranked 17th in the nation after a 48.975 that counted four scores of 9.800 or higher.
RECORD BREAKING:
Beaver gymnastics held its home opener over the past weekend, welcoming 6,551 fans into Gill Coliseum for a win over then-ranked No. 22 BYU, which included a program record 1,412 students. The total attendance number ranks 11th-most in the history of Beaver Gymnastics and is the largest crowd since welcoming 8,859 fans into Gill Coliseum during a 197.950-197.700 over No. 4 Utah on March 11, 2023.
CONSISTENT COMPETITOR:
Sophia Esposito competed on just the beam during OSU's season opener in Oceanside but found herself in three different lineups against BYU. The reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year excelled against the Cougars, earning a 9.775 for her vault before a pair of 9.850s came on beam and floor. An All Pac-12 Honorable Mention vaulter last season, Esposito has hit on 47 of her 50 career routines.
UPDATED RANKINGS:
Oregon State enters Friday's competition sitting at No. 14 in the Road To Nationals poll, down five spots despite increasing its average score by nearly one-third of a point. With a 196.088 average through two weeks of competition, OSU is one of just 14 teams in the nation to hold a 196 or higher average while senior Jade Carey sits in the top 15 individual rankings on each event – which includes top five status on bars, beam, floor and all-around.
BUCKNER ON THE BEAM:
A sophomore from Riverton, Utah, Olivia Buckner's 2025 season has gotten off to a strong start, particularly on beam. With a 9.750 in Oceanside, Buckner was given a 9.800 for her routine in the home opener, helping the beam lineup to a No. 12 ranking that is the highest of any apparatus for this Beaver team.
FLOOR SPECIALIST:
Leading off the Oregon State floor lineup on Saturday was junior Savannah Miller, who earned a 9.850 to set the tone for the Beavers. Having appeared in seven meets last season on FX, Miller has been in the floor lineup for both competitions this season and, dating back to last year, has posted a 9.825 or better in six of her last seven collegiate routines – a stretch that included a career-best 9.900 at the Pac-12 Championships in March of 2024.
CLEAN SWEEP:
So much has been written about the success of Jade Carey, yet the senior's dominance within collegiate gymnastics continues every single week. Against BYU, it was more of the same, as Carey swept the event title race with a 9.900 or higher on all four apparatuses and a 39.725 that marked the 18th time in program history that an OSU gymnast has finished with a 39.725 or higher, a tally of which 17 belong to Carey.
With three event titles against No. 4 Cal and No. 10 UCLA last weekend, she's up to eight this season with a 9.900 or higher score in seven of her eight completed routines.
STEADY IMPROVEMENTS:
From week one to week two, Oregon State's rotation score improved on every single apparatus: from 48.825 to 48.875 on vault, 48.975 to 49.075 on bars, 49.050 to 49.200 on beam and 48.925 to 49.250 on floor; led by beam at No. 12, OSU ranks in the top 25 on every single event.
CENTURY MARK:
Sydney Gonzales' first two beam routines since returning from injury have both earned 9.775s. With two hits this season, Gonzales has officially reached 100 as a collegiate gymnast in 108 total routines, a hit rate of 92.6.
STRONG START:
Lauren Letzsch improved upon her season-opening 9.825 with a 9.850 against BYU, helping fuel a beam lineup that has been among the nation's best in 2025. Entering Friday's competition, Letzsch ranks in a tie for 57th nationally on that event with a 9.838 average, which is second highest on the team behind Carey.
CONTRIBUTING EARLY:
Karlie Chavez appeared in five meets as a junior in 2024, posting three 9.850 or higher scores on floor while posting a 9.775 in her lone vault. Through two meets in 2025, Chavez has vaulted once and averaged 9.750 across two appearances on floor (9.700 / 9.800).
PERFECTION:
Natalie Briones earned a 9.750 on vault and 9.850 on bars against BYU to continue her run of consecutive hits; the Gilbert, Ariz., native was a perfect 31-31 last season and is 4-4 so far in 2025.
UP NEXT:
It's back to the road for Oregon State, who competes at Auburn on Jan. 24 in a meet set to be broadcast on ESPN2.
