Beavers Outlasted by Wyoming on Sunday
January 19, 2025 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – For the first time in over two months, the Oregon State wrestling team competed at home but fell to visiting Wyoming on Sunday by a 19-17 margin.
The Beavers' (1-5) day was highlighted by major decisions from Damion Elliott (133), CJ Hamblin (157) and Sean Harman (174).
Ninth-ranked Maximo Renteria (125) opened the day with a seven-point win at decision at 10-3. Leading from the jump with identical 3-1 advantages in the first two periods, he had no issues putting Wyoming's Garrett Ricks away but due to a taunting call, OSU was deducted a team point. A bout later, Elliott used a strong third to break it open as he turned a 3-2 lead into a major decision at 11-3.
After Wyoming closed their deficit to one at 7-6, Hamblin used a six-point third as he closed the dual's first half with a 11-3 major decision win over 17th-ranked Jared Hill. The win marked Elliott's first over a ranked opponent this season.
Harman – a West Linn, Ore., product – collected his first win inside Gill Coliseum with a major decision of his own, against Ethan Ducca at 10-2. The graduate student took advantage of stalling calls on Ducca and the riding time advantage for the win.
Despite the Cowboys taking the next two bouts, Brett Mower closed the dual with a tightly-contested 4-3 win at decision. Entering the third deadlocked at 3, Mower used a pivotal escape for the difference with just 1:40 left to seal the win.
Pac-12 play opens up the next time out for the Beavers as they will meet Little Rock in a road matchup. The opening bout of the dual with the Trojans is set for 5 p.m. PT on this upcoming Friday, January 26.
