Upset Bid of Stanford Falls Short

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Returning home to the comforts of Gill Coliseum, the Oregon State wrestling team faced their fourth consecutive ranked foe at home, this time against 16th-ranked Stanford. The Beavers' upset bid of the Cardinal fell short by a 22-16 margin.
Ethan Stiles (149) and CJ Hamblin (157) treated the Beaver fans to consecutive ranked wins to propel Oregon State (1-7) to a 13-6 lead at the dual's intermission. Stiles' win was his second consecutive over a ranked foe and Hamblin's was his second in his last three as well as his second consecutive in front of the home fans.
Following the Cardinal tying the match at 6 apiece following the 141-lb. bout, Stiles rushed out to a 4-0 lead over seventh-ranked Jaden Abas in the opening period. He built the lead to six at 12-6 after two before clinching it at 18-8 with the riding time bonus for the major decision win. In the ensuing matchup, Hamblin tallied a come-from-behind win over 28th-ranked Gregor Cholakayan with a late escape and the riding time point.
Competing up a weight class from his familiar 165, Murphy Menke used a dominant third period to take the 174-lb. bout by an 8-3 line over Collin Guffey. Trailing 1-0 after two, he tallied two takedowns and fended off a reversal to seal it by the five-point margin after the eight-point period.
The Cardinal responded again late with wins in the final three bouts, including the pivotal heavyweight bout – a ranked-versus-ranked affair - that ended up deciding the dual.
Of the nine bouts contested against the Cardinal, six were against ranked foes.
Oregon State will be back in action this Sunday, February 2nd, for a Pac-12 dual against CSU Bakersfield. The first bout is set for a 2 p.m. start and can be seen exclusively on FloWrestling.
