Renteria Registers Upset Win as Beavers Open 2025 with Ohio State
January 05, 2025 | Wrestling
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Oregon State wrestling team opened the new calendar year with a dual against fifth-ranked Ohio State on the road.
Maximo Renteria – ranked 13th at 125 – collected his second ranked win of the season as he churned out a decision over sixth-ranked Brendan McClure to highlight Oregon State's performance. The fifth-ranked Buckeyes got the dual win over Oregon State (1-4) by a 40-3 margin.
Meeting again after McClure got the best of Renteria at December's Cliff Keen Invitational, Renteria opened the action and built a lead that he would relinquish. After McClure closed it to two from 5-2 and then down to just one at 6-5 following the second, Renteria held on for the upset win at decision.
CJ Hamblin (157) and Steele Starren (165) battled tough to their opponents – No. 9 Paddy Gallagher and No. 11 Sammy Sasso, respectively – in their bouts but fell by narrow margins. Starren fell short to his ranked opposition by just a single point – an escape to open the second period.
Oregon State will return to action at home against Wyoming on Sunday, January 19th. The dual – carried exclusively by FloWrestling – is set for a 2 p.m. start.
