Beavers Fall at Saint Mary’s
February 27, 2025 | Women's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's used hot shooting in the second half to come back and beat Oregon State 69-66 on Thursday.
The Beavers fell to 11-8 in the WCC with the loss, remaining one-game ahead of San Francisco after the Dons fell to Portland.
The play of Kennedie Shuler was a bright spot for the Beavers. The sophomore point guard recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 assists.
Strong shooting carried the Beavs in a 39-22 first half. OSU made 6-of-15 three-pointers, taking advantage of space while the Gaels crashed in on Sela Heide and Kelsey Rees. Catarina Ferreira made two triples en route to a 10-point half while Rees splashed two more.
The Aussie was most of OSU's offense in the opening 20 minutes. She scored 14 points and snared five rebounds. Even when she wasn't scoring, Rees dominated Saint Mary's attention in the paint and allowed her teammates to get open looks from beyond the arc.
The Gaels shot the lights out in the second half, making 65.4 percent of their shots after the break. The made baskets allowed SMC to set up several different defenses, keeping the Beavers off balance throughout the half.
Saint Mary's clawed back into the game with a 28-16 third quarter before taking a 64-59 lead with 5:02 left in the fourth. The lead ballooned to 68-60 later in the fourth, the Gaels' biggest lead of the game.
Oregon State battled back to within two and nearly had an opportunity to tie it when Ferreira stole the ball and Scott Rueck attempted to call timeout down two points with 14 seconds left. However, Ferreira lost the ball and the timing on the timeout was unclear, leading to the officials giving SMC the ball back with no time on the shot clock.
Three-pointers with the clock winding down fell short to seal the win for the Gaels.
The Beavers' final road trip of the regular season continues on Saturday at Pepperdine. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
