Beavs Close Road Slate With Win Over Mustangs
February 07, 2025 | Wrestling
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Oregon State wrestling team closed the Pac-12 portion of the season with a 23-12 win over Cal Poly on Friday night.
Led by ranked wins from no. 18 Ethan Stiles (149) and Kekana Fouret (165), the Beavers (3-7, 2-1 Pac-12) took six of the dual's bouts on the way to the 11-point win. Trey Munoz made a return to the lineup, where he recorded a win by technical fall, 20-4 (3:50) in the 197-lb. matchup.
Facing an early deficit after dropping a 125-lb. sudden victory match, the Beavers rattled off three consecutive wins to flip the momentum (133-149-lbs).
Competing up a class at 133, Hunter Taylor used a strong third period to get the Beavers on the board. Behind in the opening of the final period, he turned it to a three-point lead with an escape, takedown and the riding time bonus.
Singleton followed up Taylor's win with a dominant pin – his first of the season – in just 4:31. The Oregonian quickly set the tone with a takedown and nearly a minute's worth of riding time in the first. Starting in the second, he escaped from Caleb Park and rattled off two takedowns before securing the fall.
Facing his third ranked opponent in his last four matches, Ethan Stiles – ranked 18th and the league's reigning wrestler of the week – kept up his momentum, defeating sixth-ranked Chance Lamer 4-2. Claiming the sole takedown of the matchup, Stiles kept Lamer at bay as he worked toward the decision. Late in the third leading by just a point, Stiles took advantage of Lamer's stall as one final bit of separation before the final buzzer sounded.
Returning to the lineup for the first time since December, Fouret (165) made noise with his ranked win over Luka Wick. Kekana secured 1:59 of riding time to push the 0-1 match into sudden victory. Fouret secured the ranked win with the sole takedown of the match.
At 174-lb., Murphy Menke used a strong third to double up Cash Stewart in a decision win, 14-7. He clocked 3:07 of riding time, working to push for the major.
Making his first appearance since an injury at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Munoz cruised to his tech fall, recording four first period takedowns before another two in the second to win over Tyler Hodges. The win marked his third win by technical fall this season and second in dual competition.
The Mustangs used a win at heavyweight to win the final bout but the Beavers rode high with a final score of 23-12 to win the dual.
The Beavers will return home to close the regular season against North Carolina on February 23rd. Action against the Tar Heels is slated for 2 p.m. and can be seen exclusively on FloWrestling.
