Newcomers Shine in Friday Night Win over Anteaters
September 12, 2025 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team upped their winning streak to four with a Friday night win over UC Irvine in the ASICS Invitational.
A high-hitting offense and stout defense secured the win with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-21 scoreline to send the Beaver faithful home happy. Oregon State registered a cumulative .320 offensive clip while keeping the Anteaters to a measly .065.
"Tonight's win was a great team effort," said head coach Lindsey Behonick. "We started strong offensively and responded well when (UC) Irvine fought back. Alana (Marrs) had a great offensive night and Keila (Gabriel) made some key plays for us. I loved our responses tonight against a scrappy Irvine team. This team is fun to watch!"
Newcomers led the way on both sides of play as Alana Marrs (10) and Keila Gabriel (9) combined for 19 of OSU's 43 kills while Jackie Matias and Tia Shum each dug out 10 to pace the defense. A trio of Maëli Cormier, Annika Hester and Lauren Rumel each registered four kills. Trustworthy ball flow on the offensive end came by way of 20 Emma Lilo kills. An Oregonian making her first start at home, Cheyenne Green led the way in blocks (4) in addition to four digs.
The Beavers set the tone early in the first sets of the night, winning by identical 25-13 scores. In the first frame, the defense stole the show early with 23 digs and held the Anteaters to just a .023 clip. Matias had seven of her 10 digs in the first while Rumel led the charge with four kills. With just an 11-8 lead in the opener, the Beavs used an 8-1 run to break it open and saw their lead balloon to the final difference of 12.
A set later, the offense shone with a .538 hitting rate to put the Anteaters on the brink. Green and Marrs, each with four kills, led the red-hot attack that combined for 14 kills while Matias dished five assists. The Beavers pulled away early in the frame, using timely runs of 3-0 and 4-0 to build the advantage.
Eager to put the Anteaters away quickly, the Beavers saw adversity with a tight third to end the night. Though Oregon State claimed the set by a four-point cushion, the Beavers clawed back from deficits of 5-1 and 13-10 to get the win. Eight assists from Lilo and five kills courtesy of Cormier helped push the Beavers to the finish line.
Oregon State will close the ASICS Invitational tomorrow against UNLV at 3 p.m. First serve against the Rebels can be seen on ESPN+.

With the win, Oregon State (4-3) has now won each of their last four by sweeps. This year's squad has tied the 2008 team with four consecutive sweeps, the most in program history in the rally-scoring era.
Dating back to last season (November 2024), the Beavers have also won four consecutive inside Gill Coliseum.
