Joyner Adds Argenal to Staff
April 03, 2026 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's basketball program has added Justin Argenal to its staff in the role of Assistant Coach/General Manager, head coach Justin Joyner announced Friday.
"Coach Argenal is one of the best leaders that I have ever been around," Joyner said. "He's been a part of some great staffs, working with Mike White and Dusty May, and has experience in all facets of college basketball from operations all the way to head coach. Justin will be a valuable addition to our staff and this program."
Argenal joins the Beavers after spending the last five seasons as head coach at Dominican University of California. During his time leading the Penguins, Argenal was able to successfully improve the program, culminating in a 17-11 record in 2025-26 – the program's first year above .500 in 12 years and the second most wins in program history. Under Argenal's guidance, Nick Medeiros and Marcus McCutchen were rewarded with All-Pac West honors.
"I am incredibly honored to join Oregon State and be part of such a storied program," Argenal said. "I'm grateful to Coach Joyner for the opportunity and excited to get to work with the student-athletes here in Corvallis. Building a program that this community is proud of is the mission. Go Beavs!"
Prior to his time at Dominican, Argenal spent five seasons as the head coach for California powerhouse De La Salle High School, leading the Spartans to a 113-33 record. He was named NorCalPreps Northern California Coach of the Year and NorCalPreps NCS Division I Coach of the Year in both 2017 and 2019. De La Salle won three NCS Division I Championships (2017, 2019 and 2020) and an EBAL Championship (2019) under his guidance. The Spartans were Open Division semifinalists in 2017 and 2019.
Argenal began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ole Miss in 2009-10 helping the Rebels to a 24-11 record and a finish in the NIT Final Four before three seasons as a director of basketball operations at The Citadel and Louisiana Tech. He then served as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level for Southeast Missouri State and The Citadel from 2013-2015. Argenal moved back to California for one season as the head assistant basketball coach at NCAA Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills before being hired as the head coach at De La Salle.
A native of Lafeyette, California, Argenal was a point guard at De La Salle High School before moving on to a college career at UC Riverside and Chico State. Argenal left the Wildcats as the program and conference's all-time career leader in assists and steals, earning All-CCAA Second Team honors.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a minor in coaching from Chico State, and a masters degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia (Irvine). Argenal moves to Corvallis with his wife Suzanne and their two daughters Sky and Isla.
