Mike McHugh was appointed to Trent Bray’s staff as director of football operations in 2023. In his role, McHugh is involved in a wide variety of important administrative duties related to overseeing the coordination of all team travel, oversight of the football budget, handling compliance and academic issues, scheduling of facilities, assisting with recruiting operations and managing the day-to-day functions of the program.

The Boyertown, Pa., native came to Oregon State from Fresno State where had served as the assistant athletics director for football operations and chief of staff since 2018. It was his second stint with the Bulldogs, his first coming in 2013 as director of football operations.

McHugh has served as a director of operations for more than 25 years. In addition to Fresno State, he worked for five years at Missouri (1994-98 and 2016-17) and Washington (2014-15). He was the director of operations at California from 2003-12 and Oregon in 1999-2000.

He’s also held a number of non-operational positions at the high school, collegiate and professional ranks. McHugh was a quality control coach with the Detroit Lions in 2001 and 2022, a video coordinator and recruiting assistant at Missouri in 1993, and four years (1989-92) at Eastern Michigan as the defensive line coach, recruiting coordinator and assistant offensive line coach.

He began his career Findlay’s head women’s track and field coach in 1982 before moving to football as an assistant coach at Northmor High School in Ohio before becoming the program’s head coach.

McHugh began his playing career at Potomac State College in 1976 and was the team’s leading receiver and a team captain. He was inducted into Potomac State’s Hall of Fame in 2018.

McHugh continued his career at Findlay, and was a member of the Oilers’ 1979 NAIA Championship team.

McHugh is a 1983 graduate of Findlay, earning a degree in health and physical education. He earned his master’s in physical education from Eastern Michigan in 1993.
