STANFORD, Calif. - Three Beavers finished with double-figure kills, but the Oregon State volleyball team fell to No. 7 Stanford in three games (15-11, 15-11, 15-5) Friday evening.
Krista Kinsman hit .346 with a season-high 11 kills and just missed a double-double with nine digs. Sarah Bjeldanes added 12 kills, and Angie Shirley hit .417 with 11 kills.
"I was happy with the way we played," said coach Nancy Somera. "We outplayed them, but we just didn't get the 'W'. Our passing was much improved from our last match, and we were able to run our offense because of it."
But the Beavers (7-6, 1-4) could not stop Stanford's Logan Tom, who hit .375 with a match-high 26 kills to lead four Cardinal players in double-figures.
After finding themselves down 14-7 in game one, the Beavers made sure the Cardinal would not come away with an easy victory. OSU responded with seven kills on seven Stanford game-point opportunities, and the Beavers scattered a few points of their own in between sideouts.
In game two, OSU broke away from a 5-5 tie to take a 10-5 lead, but Stanford (11-0, 5-0) found a way back into the contest. With her team down 11-9, Tara Conrad slammed down a kill to give the serve back to the Cardinal. Conrad then served an ace and Sara Sandrik picked up a kill to tie the game. An OSU miscommunication error gave Stanford a lead it would not relinquish.
After putting up a fight in the first two games, the Beavers struggled in the final game. Stanford had 22 kills and hit .356 for its best offensive game of the night, while OSU had just 14 kills and hit .209 as a team. Stanford had a slight 7-5 lead before scoring the next eight points of the match.
"All the work we did on passing this week really helped. (Tonight's match) made us think, hey - we can do this," said Kinsman. "Everybody just went out and played. We had nothing to lose in this game, just kind of go out and not worry about anything."
OSU finished the night with 55 kills and 46 digs, compared to Stanford's 68 kills and 56 digs. The Beavers did outblock the Cardinal, 10-5, with five block assists coming from both Shirley and Michele Solomon.
The Cardinal served five aces to OSU's one, and the Beavers also ended up with nine service errors in the loss.
