CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 7 Arizona at Gill Coliseum on Friday night despite a late Beaver surge that almost sent the match into a fourth game. Game scores were 15-9, 15-8 and 16-14.
After losing the first two games as a result of poor hitting, the Beavers (11-5, 3-3) turned things around in the third game. OSU, which hit just .055 in the games one and two, responded with a .258 hitting percentage in the third game.
With the third game tied, 12-12, OSU's Lianne Dela Cruz came in to serve for the first time in the match. She had two tough serves to throw Arizona's offensive scheme off a bit to put OSU up, 14-12, but her next serve went long to give the Wildcats a sideout. Arizona (13-1, 6-0) then went on a 4-0 run to take the game and the match.
"We put ourselves in a position to win game three, and who knows what might have happened after that," said coach Nancy Somera. "We put ourselves in that position by making adjustments, and once we made those adjustments we were competitive. It just took too long."
Lori Daedelow led the Beavers with 13 kills, tying UA's Jill Talbot for the most in the match. Daedelow hit an impressive .435 on the night. OSU's Gina Schmidt and Michele Solomon each had 11 kills, as did two other Wildcats.
"We had a great performance from Lori Daedelow," said Somera. "Arizona is a very good blocking team, and that put some of our hitters in a wrong state of mind. We're learning how to not let things that are out of our control affect us."
The Wildcats had 16 blocks to OSU's nine. Arizona also outdug the Beavers, 50-49.
OSU returns to action Saturday, October 6 when the Beavers host Arizona State at 7 p.m.
