CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State led or was tied for the first two-thirds of the game but 21st-ranked Florida State escaped with a 2-1 win in non-league women's soccer Friday evening on Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The Beavers (6-5-0 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) got a goal from Stephanie Lucas in the 14th minute, but the Seminoles (8-4-0, 0-2-0 Atlantic Coast) scored twice early in the second half for the win.
OSU now closes out its non-league schedule against Pepperdine, kickoff is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. on Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The Beavers will be seeking the same intensity they showed against the Seminoles as Oregon State shook off a lethargic win over Portland State on Tuesday.
"Obviously, the result was disappointing," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said of Friday's loss. "But we played them off the park in every quarter. The kids were fantastic - they played with class and style and knocked the ball around well."
OSU had the majority of dangerous scoring chances and outshot Florida State 19-10.
"That can be misleading," Fennah said of the shot count. "But in this game, it was indicative of how the contest went. But Florida State came a long way and battled, and showed the class of a team ranked in the top 25."
The game was decided by a pair of close calls in the second half, one at each goal mouth.
In the 61st minute, the ball bounced from a pack out to the left side at OSU's goal, the Seminoles' Emma Breland took a shot that deflected off OSU goalkeeper Jerika Duran and dribbled near the goal line before being booted away by a Beaver defender. Both teams were initially signalled to play on, but after a few moments the officials convened and awarded FSU the goal and a 2-1 lead.
In the 87th minute, an Oregon State corner kick led to a scramble in front of the goal and again the ball was near the goal line before being knocked away. OSU's players went into a celebration and both teams headed toward midfield but the call was that the ball hadn't crossed the line and action continued.
"All I can do is look at the reaction of the players," Fennah said of how it looked from his sideline vantage point. "From the reaction of our players, and from the reaction of their players in particular, it appeared the ball must have crossed the line ... it will be interesting to watch the tape. But, also, we missed some opportunities to wrap it up ourselves."
The Beavers took a 1-0 lead when Lucas received a cross to the left in the middle of the field from Courtney Carter, then drove the ball from eight yards out into the upper right corner of the net in the 14th minute. It was the second straight game with a goal for Lucas, a freshman who had her first collegiate goal and assist on Tuesday.
"She makes things happen," Fennah said of Lucas. "She buzzes around and creates opportunities. All four of our forwards did a nice job, both pairs (Lucas and Carter, and Dante Lipfert and BreeAnna Jolin) caused them problems. And Morgan Crabtree, Leila Kaady and Whitney Horn all did very well for us in the center of the park."
OSU held the lead until the 50th minute, when there was a scramble in the Beaver penalty area. Cindy Schofield directed the ball out right to Summer Corum, whose shot from 10 yards out went into the middle of the net just under the crossbar.
