Palo Alto, Calif. -- Senior outside hitter Allison Lawrence recorded a team-high 24 kills and Oregon State's volleyball squad took a game from No. 12 ranked Stanford University, before falling 3-1 in Friday's Pacific-10 Conference action. The Cardinal finished with a 24-30, 30-19, 30-20, 30-21 victory to hold OSU winless in the series between the two schools.
Oregon State falls to 8-7 overall and 2-4 in the Pac-10, while Stanford improves to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
OSU streaked out of the gates, taking an early 5-3 lead in game one. The Cardinal responded with a 5-0 run to take an 8-5 advantage, but Oregon State fought back and a kill by Karah Rhoades knotted the score at 10-10. The Beavers took advantage of a Stanford ball-handling error followed by a kill from setter Desma Stovall and never looked back in the game. Lawrence ended the game with a kill to secure the 30-24 Beaver victory.
Oregon State hit .366 in the first game, compared to Stanford's .243 mark, but the Cardinal responded to take a .348 to .191 hitting advantage in the match.
Lawrence finished with a team-best .333 hitting percentage and 24 kills, while Nina Baltimore led the Beavers in digs for the fourth time in the last five matches with 18. Junior Kristy Mortensen finished with a career-high 15 assists and Stovall added 36.
Stanford senior Ogonna Nnamani surpassed the 2,000-kill mark, finishing with a match-high 28 kills and a .571 attack percentage.
Oregon State looks to break a four-match losing streak on Saturday at No. 13 ranked California. First-serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
