CORVALLIS, Ore. - Chad Hanke and Jon Brascetta each picked up falls to pace the 13th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team to a 49-0 decision over Simon Fraser in front of 1,071 fans at legendary Gill Coliseum Saturday night.
"This was a good night for a number of our guys," Oregon State head coach Jim Zalesky said. "We had a couple of really good bouts and guys did some good things with what they had. This was a good chance to gain some experience heading into Las Vegas next weekend."
Hanke's win came just 1:29 into his 197-pound bout with Pardeep Rekhi and pushed his record to 5-0 this season. It pushed OSU to a 44-0 lead that was extended at the heavyweight mark when Clayton Jack earned a technical fall over Gurjoot Kooner for the 49-point finale.
Hanke became the first Beaver with three falls this season, and he is now 10-8 in his career. He has earned the Beavers 25 points at the 197-class this season.
The other fall on the night, and the first to come at the 165-pound class, was courtesy of Brascetta over Max Arcand and came in quicker fashion, at just 1:13. For Brascetta, it was his first fall of the season and seventh of his career.
Jack's technical fall to end the meet was Oregon State's fourth of the night as the Beavers earned 49 of a possible 60 points to improve to 21-1 all-time against Simon Fraser. Oregon State (3-0-2 overall) last defeated the Clan, 47-0.
Jason Lara opened the meet with an 18-3 technical fall over Skylor Davis, then watched as Jacob Lauderdale downed Kurtis Giberson with an 8-6 decision at 133 pounds.
Kelly Kubec pushed OSU's score to 13-0 with a 16-1 technical fall of JJ Lum. It was Kubec's third straight victory after the Lake Stevens, Wash., native had opened the year with consecutive losses.
Scott Sakaguchi (149 pounds) continued the night rolling for Oregon State as he was a 12-2 major-decision winner over Alex Stemmer, cushioning OSU's lead to 17-0.
Alex Elder drew perhaps the loudest cheer of the night at the 157-pound class. The freshman from Salem, Ore., won via technical fall, 27-10, over Michael Cappus, but he had to do so in comeback fashion. He fell behind 10-4 after the first period, but went on to earn 18 points in the second period to take a commanding 22-10 lead. All 18 points came via near falls.
Cody Weishoff picked up his first win of the season and snapped a three-bout losing streak by downing Arminder Virk at 174 pounds. He was a 15-1 technical fall winner over his Simon Fraser opponent, which put the Beavers up 32-0.
Oregon State next travels to Nevada for the Las Vegas Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Check osubeavers.com for full results and recaps from the weekend in Las Vegas.
