CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team kicked off its 2010 campaign with a 3-1 exhibition win over Trinity Western University Thursday night at Paul Lorenz Field. The Beavers gave up an early goal but scored three unanswered goals, with the help of a Spartan own goal, to take the victory.
"I thought the girls did a good job tonight," second year Oregon State women's soccer head coach Linus Rhode said following the victory. "Obviously we have to get rid of a lot of the kinks but we're going to get a lot out of this game."
The Beavers fell behind 1-0 early when Trinity Western's Daniela Gerig shot the ball from the left side to the right past the Beaver keeper on a cross from Natalie Boyd.
"It's always tough when you're pressuring a team and getting your chances and they get a goal off of a counter," Rhode said. "You have to give credit to our team for keeping their heads in there and fighting back."
Oregon State did fight back when Galindo off of a corner kick from fellow team co-captain Courtney Wetzel battled with the Spartan goalie inside the box and knocked it in for her first career goal.
"We had about eight corner kicks and we had to get one in," junior defender and team co-captain Brittany Galindo said following the match. "That was my first goal in college and I was really excited."
The Beavers took the lead on a Megan Miller goal in which she launched the ball from the left side of the field into the lower right corner of the net with the ball never getting more than a few feet off of the ground. Miller's goal made the score 2-1 going into half time.
A scary moment occurred right before the half when Trinity Western's Tessa Meyer was awarded a red card for throwing an elbow above the shoulders and hitting an Oregon State player. On the play, Meyer was injured with a lower leg injury which required her to be carted off of the field by Oregon State athletic training staff.
Following the Meyer injury and red card, a Spartan assistant coach was given two yellow cards and was subsequently ejected from the match for arguing the Meyer red card.
The Beavers picked up an insurance goal on a gift from a Spartan defender who accidently kicked the ball into her own goal giving the Beavers the 3-1 victory.
The Beavers now look towards their regular season opener Sunday, August 22 when they travel to take on the Seattle University Redhawks starting at 1 p.m. in Seattle, Wash. They make their regular season home debut against Portland State Sept. 10 starting at 7 p.m. at Paul Lorenz Field.
