CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 20 Oregon State women's soccer team remains perfect on the season after taking down Portland State 1-0 Friday night at Paul Lorenz Field. Junior Melinda Ingalls picked up her third goal of the season while fellow junior and goalkeeper Colleen Boyd moves to 4-0-0 on the season with her three saves in the match.
"We're happy with 4-0," Oregon State women's head coach Linus Rhode said following with win. "We will take the wins. I think tonight we played our best soccer to date on both sides of the ball. I'm very happy with the performance of our entire team tonight."
The shots came for the Beavers (4-0-0 overall) early and in bunches. They totaled 18 in the game, 11 coming in the first half. Seven of Oregon State's 18 shots came on goal with one finding the back of the net.
Ingalls' third goal of the season came in the 31st minute on a nice cross from junior Ashley Seal in which Ingalls put the ball in the upper right corner of the net. It was Seal's first assist and point of the 2010 season.
Even with the lead the Beavers never went on the defensive and kept pushing the ball into Viking territory. Chelsea Buckland recorded five shots in the game with Courtney Wetzel racking up another four, three coming on goal. Ingalls had three of her four shots going on goal along with the game winner.
Boyd moves to 4-0-0 this season and has yet to give up a goal this season and has not given up a goal in her last 298:25 minutes in goal going back to last season.
Portland moves to 2-3-0 on the season with the loss Friday night. The Vikings put up a late push bringing more people up into Oregon State territory and keep the Beavers on their toes. On one instance, the Vikings played the ball twice in a row in off of corner kicks in which Boyd made two excellent punches of the ball to clear it from the box.
The Beavers are back home next Friday and Sunday when they take on Butler and San Diego State respectively as part of the Oregon State Nike Invitational. It will also be alumni weekend for both the men and women's soccer teams.
As always, admission is free for fans for all Oregon State home games. Those attending the match are encouraged to "Help Fight Hunger" by bringing a canned food item to donate to community outreach.
