Charleston, S.C. – Senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) posted a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs, but the Oregon State volleyball team (3-5) fell in three (24-26, 20-25, 17-25) to Auburn (8-2) in the Holiday Inn Classic opener on Friday afternoon.
“We never sustained good play, meaning we both emotionally and we were never able to get a fluid 1-2-3 in sets,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We played poorly and never got into system. On a positive note, I thought Jill [Sawatzky] and Kelsey [Zimmerman] played aggressively, as did Mona [Kressl] at the end of the second set into the third. We need better efficiency as a group, emotionally and in effort.”
Freshman Kelsey Zimmerman (Bend, Ore.) added seven kills, while freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) had a team-high 10 digs.
The Beavers took an early match lead, building it to as many as eight at the 19-11 mark. But Auburn came back and continued to control the match to take the three-set win.
Auburn's Sarah Bullock tallied a team-high 12 kills, while libero Liz Crouch dug a match-high 20 balls.
Oregon State continues play in the Holiday Inn Classic on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. PT against Cincinnati.
Oregon State Notes – Senior Jill Sawatzky earned her fourth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs.
