DeKALB, Ill. - The Oregon State men's soccer team fell to Northwestern Sunday morning by a final score of 4-1 in DeKalb, Ill. It is the first loss of the season for the Beavers who are now 3-1 overall having played all four games on the road to start the 2010 season.
"In the bigger picture starting out 3-1 on a road trip like this is a good thing but you're only as good as your last game," Oregon State men's soccer Steve Simmons said following Sunday's match. "We were in the game emotionally but our guys just didn't make the plays when they needed to."
Northwestern (2-2 overall) took the early lead with a goal by Lepe Seetane in the 23rd minute. Northwestern had the 1-0 lead going into half time but a foul early in the second half gave it a penalty kick goal in the 46th minute. Northwestern added another goal in the 69th minute taking a 3-0 lead.
Oregon State got on the board with Brian Ramsey's third goal of the season. He took the ball and held off a defender, turned and scored in the lower right corner of the net. Alex Eckerson and Travis Sanchez were in on the play and were credited with assists.
Ramsey took four shots in the game, half of the Beavers' eight total shots. He also accounted for both of the Beavers' shots on goal.
"Brian Ramsey has had an excellent start to the season," Simmons said. "The goal he scored today really turned the momentum. It would have been tough to come back and win but his goal gave us a push late in the game. He has been a bright spot for us early in the season."
Northwestern added a late goal to take the 4-1 lead which ended up being the final score.
Ramsey along with Roberto Farfan and goalkeeper Steve Spangler were all named to the all-tournament team following play Sunday. Ramsey scored two goals during the tournament for the Beavers while Farfan added a goal and an assist. Spangler recorded 12 saves in two games including a nine save performance against Northern Illinois.
"I think we're all excited to get back home," Simmons said. "It's been a long trip out here. I think it's helped they guys in many ways but it is a long time away from home. We're all excited to get back to Corvallis and get back into a routine at the University and play at home this next weekend."
The Beavers return home after their two week road trip for their regular season home opener against UC Davis as part of the Oregon State Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic Friday, Sept. 17 starting at 7 p.m. Prior to kickoff of the match Friday night, there will be a special presentation honoring former Oregon State men's soccer head coach Jimmy Conway.
