Seattle, Wash. – Audrey Botti finished sixth overall during the women's race with a time of 21:21.88 to help the Beaver cross country team to a third place finish at the 20th annual Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, Wash today.
“Audrey ran great,” assistant coach Travis Floeck said. “She had a goal and she met the goal that she had set out for herself today. She is turning into a really savvy racer and today she got another great effort in.”
The Beavers came in third place behind second place Idaho, while the hosts Washington took first. Oregon State finished with 65 teams points, while Simon Fraser and Eastern Washington finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Olivia Poblacion and Erin Jones continue to impress the coaches with their hard work this season finishing the race with times of 21:57.40 and 22:11.47, respectively. They finished third and fifth for the Beavers.
“Erin worked really hard over the summer and it is really paying off for this cross country season,” Floeck said. “I think she ran 40 seconds faster than she did two years ago at this race. Olivia ran 50 seconds faster than she did two years ago and it just represents the hard work they have been putting in and the improvement they are showing this season.”
Sophomore Chloe Steinbeck finished second for the Beavers with a time of 21:54.90. After transferring from the University of Oregon, this was Steinbeck's first cross country race in three years.
“She wasn't really a cross country runner in high school because she was a middle distance runner,” Floeck said. “This was her first 6,000 meter race ever and it was her first race period in a year and a half because she sat out last year due to transfer rules. But she ran great today even though she was nervous going into it. She got in there and ran hard, and we are extremely happy with the results."
Several other fresh faces for the Beavers got to make their first appearances in the orange and black uniforms today, highlighted by freshman Kinsey Gomez. She finished with a time of 21:57.68 and finished fourth for the Beavers.
“We expected this from Kinsey,” Floeck said. “She is a really tough girl and she got in there and competed. She got in there and went to work and ran great. She has been training with Chloe and they were able to run throughout the race together.”
Freshman Aly Nielson also ran well for the Beavers finishing with a time of 22:39.72 and finishing seventh for the Beavers. After running cross country in high school in Texas, this meet was a test for her because of the new distance.
“In Texas cross country they only run two miles and a 6,000 meter course is almost double that,” Floeck said. “We thought she ran great. She has been training with Kinsey and Chloe and I think as she gets more comfortable with the distance I think she will be able to move up in our pack.”
Oregon State returns to action Saturday October 1 at 10:30 a.m. when they compete in the University of Oregon Bill Dellinger Invitational in Eugene, Ore.
