CORVALLIS, Ore. - Megan McBride was just two kills shy of a triple double and Camille Saxton tallied 14 kills and three service aces to pace the Oregon State Volleyball team in a four-set win (25-20, 23-25, 27-25, 25-17) over Washington State Sunday at Gill Coliseum.
McBride posted 43 assists and set a season-best with 15 digs for her second double double of the season. The senior finished with eight kills, placing her just two away from a triple double.
She was joined offensively by Saxton, whose three service aces helped guide the Beavers to nine overall. She also posted 14 kills to lead the Beavers, and also finished with a double double after claiming 10 digs. It was her team-leading fourth double double of the season.
"This was a big win for us," Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. "This is such a good volleyball conference and wins are big. We won the serving and passing battle today. I can't say enough about Megan. She played a really great game today. This was a great team effort, overall, and we got contributions from everyone."
Six different Oregon State (13-7 overall, 3-5 Pac-12 Conference) players finished with at least 10 points for the Beavers, who snapped a three-match losing streak with Sunday's win over the Cougars (10-10, 0-8).
Ashley Eneliko claimed 12 kills and Sara Almen had a career-best nine while hitting .368. The freshman also contributed with three digs and two assisted blocks as Oregon State posted 14 as a team - Arica Nassar had a team-leading seven while Haley Clarke finished with two solo for a total of five on the day.
The defensive edge went to the Beavers, who out-blocked Washington State, 14-7, and finished with one more dig, 66-65. Becky Defoe paced the Beavers with 16 and moved into third all-time in school history with 1,313.
The Cougars had a strong offensive day by four players, who all finished with 11 or more kills. Jaicee Harris led Washington State with 15, while Rachel Todorovich, Marcellina Glab and Ver'Leea Hardaway tallied 11 apiece. But the Beavers managed to hold Washington State to a .195 hitting percentage - on the strength of 27 errors - while Oregon State itself hit .251.
In the end, the advantage may have ultimately fallen on the Beavers due to the team's clear advantage serving. Both Saxton and Defoe had three service aces apiece to give the Beavers nine on the night. OSU also committed six serving errors but the Cougars failed to break the Beavers on the serve, finishing with one service error.
The Beavers took the first set, 25-20, on the strength of a .375 hitting percentage. Saxton led Oregon State with six kills while Eneliko had five. WSU hit .216 during the frame, with Todorovich and Glab tying for the team lead with four kills.
Washington State evened the match with a 25-23 second-set win. The Cougars hit only .158 but held Oregon State to a .075 clip. The Beavers were down late, 23-20, and scored three of the next four points before the Cougars managed to put the set away.
The Beavers bettered their hitting percentages for the final two sets. OSU hit .260 in set three and battled back from a late deficit - holding off WSU when the Cougars held a 24-23 lead - for a 27-25 win. In set four, the Beavers led by as little as two, 14-12, before breaking away for the 25-17 victory.
