TEMPE, Ariz. - The Oregon State volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to Arizona State Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Set scores were 12-25, 20-25 and 25-16.
"We have to attack better because we can't be hitting at one percent and think we can beat anybody," head coach Taras Liskevych said. "You can't do that. We just didn't have enough hitting numbers. Megan (McBride) played well; she hit well and set well."
Oregon State fell to 13-8 overall this season and 3-6 in Pac-12 Conference play. The Sun Devils, meanwhile, improved to 14-8 overall and 3-6 in league matches.
The Beavers were unable to get their offense going, finishing with a hitting percentage of .01. Oregon State failed to have a player post double figures in kills for just the third time this season. Camille Saxton led the Beavers with eight kills. She moved into 15th in school history with 979 for her career.
Arizona State, conversely, managed a hitting percentage of .257 and was led offensively by Erica Wilson, who finished with 16 kills.
Oregon State was able to out-block the Sun Devils, 11.5-4.0, with Arica Nassar leading the team with four. Ashley Eneliko posted three, giving her sss for her career. She's now the 11th player in school history with 300 or more blocks in a career.
Arizona State claimed the first set, 25-12, after hitting .333 to the Beavers' .000. There were only two lead changes in the set, early on, and the Sun Devils went ahead for good at 4-3. Ashley Eneliko and Camille Saxton led the Beavers with two kills during the frame while Erica Wilson paced ASU with eight.
The first set proved to be key as the Beavers dropped to 3-8 this season when losing it.
ASU took a 2-0 advantage with a 25-20 win in set two. Saxton, Arica Nassar and Megan McBride had three kills apiece to pace the Beavers, who upped their hitting percentage to .056 but the Sun Devils' .229 was too much to overcome. The Beavers held a 17-15 lead, but relinquished it at 18-17 and were unable to match ASU the rest of the frame.
The Sun Devils held the advantage for virtually the entire third set and took the match with the 25-16 win. ASU out-hit the Beavers in the set with a .216 percentage. OSU was held at -0.033.
Oregon State concludes its trip when visiting Arizona Sunday at McKale Center. The match begins at 11 a.m. PT and can be seen live in the state of Oregon on the Pac-12 Networks.
