FRESNO, Calif. – Oregon State volleyball swept the Fresno State Bulldogs on Thursday in dominant fashion, taking the match with set scores of 25-20, 25-12 and 25-18 inside the Save Mart Center.
Â
AC Froehlich paced the offense with 14 kills, adding nine digs and two aces. Taray Tela tallied 11 kills on a .667 clip to go with four blocks while Alana Marrs hit .417 on her way to 11 kills and five blocks; Cheyenne Green amassed six kills and eight digs.
Â
Reigning Pac-12 Setter of the Week Jackie Matias averaged over 13 assists per set on her way to 40 in the match, and Isabel Bertelsen led the defense with 12 digs and a team-leading four aces.
Â
Oregon State's ability from the service line was crucial as the Beavers tallied double-digit aces for the fourth time this season, finishing with 10. The last time OSU reached 10 aces in a single match was when hosting Fresno State at Gill Coliseum on Oct. 3.
Â
The Beavers started fast in set one but Fresno countered quickly, using a 6-0 run to flip the match to 9-7 in favor of the hosts. Oregon State, much like it has all season long, responded and took over the middle portion of the set, using a Kama Goldstein ace to draw a timeout after putting the Beavers up 17-13. Froehlich contributed seven kills, helping Oregon State to finish strong and take the first 25-20.
Â
Service aces were the name of the game in an impressive set two that was all Beavers all the way. The team scored four-plus unanswered three separate times and scored six times from the service line – including a stretch of three-straight by Bertelsen early on – to fuel an impressive 25-12 win.
Â
Set three was back-and-forth early but another long run by the Beavers broke things open when Taylor Treahy, Froehlich (twice) and Tela all tallied kills during a 5-0 run to turn a two-point deficit into a three-point advantage. After one Fresno State kill, Bertelsen found another gap in the defense from the service line to cap off yet another 3-0 run and put the Beavs up 14-9, which drew a Fresno State timeout.
Â
Four more unanswered built the lead to 20-12 as Oregon State reached double-digit wins on the season and a 5-2 record in Pac-12 play with a 25-18 win in set three, securing the team's second-straight sweep.
Beaver Volleyball returns home to host Utah State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
