STANFORD, Calif. – Last week, it was the Oregon State men's soccer team finding the late magic to earn a 2-2 tie with Stanford. Thursday night, it was the Cardinal with two goals in the 85th minute to snatch a 3-2 win from the Beavers.
The opener came after senior Emery Welshman rallied to a loose ball in the left corner and sent a usable service towards Shelton streaking towards the Cardinal goal. The ball never touched the turf as Shelton one-touched it into the net behind keeper Jason Dodson to make it 1-0 in the fifth minute.
After Stanford's Zach Batteer tied the score in the 19th minute off a corner kick that saw keeper Matt Bersano get knocked in the head by Batteer's knee, Welshman became the beneficiary of a quality pass. Senior Alex Penny played a loose ball and carried forward with little resistance and spotted Welshman splitting a pair of Cardinal defenders. The pass was spot-on as Welshman caught up to it in stride and chipped in neatly over Dodson for a 2-1 OSU advantage 59 minutes into action.
The Beavers hit the crossbar twice in the second half as they tried to extend the lead. Will Seymore had the best opportunity off a free kick from around 25 yards out. Shelton almost added his second of the match soon after, but his header attempt from Welshman's foot was saved neatly.
Stanford nearly tied it on a header deflection that went just wide, but then managed to find the equalizer almost by accident. A centering pass was batted around and a clearing attempt by the Beavers was redirected in behind Bersano to tie the score at 2-2. Less than a minute later, Eric Anderson chipped a crossing pass to the left post where Adam Jahn touched it home to complete the comeback
Bersano stayed in the game with a bandage over his left eye to make four saves. Welshman's ninth goal is tops in the Pac-12. Oregon State will have an extra day to recover before its second rematch in a week as the Beavers face California on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
