Oregon State Post Game Quotes
Head Coach Mike Riley
On keeping the Ducks close early and then falling behind…
“We sure had what appeared to be a good opportunity, but we did not take very good care of the football. We gave them (Oregon) way too many opportunities and when you do that with a good team, then that is what happens.”
On turning the ball over…
“You can't win with turnovers, especially with a really good team on the other side of the ball. We had turnovers in the kicking game and we had turnovers on the offense. I don't think that we played great defense, but we put our defense on the field way too much. You have to score some points because they (Oregon) are going to. We had a chance to make it that kind of game, but we didn't.”
On staying positive for OSU's final game next week…
“I think that this one (The Nicholls State game) is about the preparation, really wanting to win and setting a tone for the complete identity (of the team). The identity of a football team lasts for the year, It is felt throughout the course of the season. We are down for the last couple of chapters and we need to talk to the team about putting an exclamation point on who they want to be remembered as. One of the first ways a team is remembered is their record, so we want to make that record as good as we can.”
Sophomore Quarterback Sean Mannion
On what the difference was in the loss…
“I think a lot of that is what we can do. I know with myself, I need to work on turnovers. I am proud of the way our team fought until the end, and I think there wasn't any quit out there. Also, I think that it was a lot closer then what the scoreboard had predicted, I think we came out and had a great drive to open up the second half when the score was 20-17. We needed to do a better job finishing, but overall I don't think that it wasn't completely bad.
On Oregon scoring as many points as they did…
“Personally, I think it had to do with turning the ball over, and with myself especially. I know that I needed to do a better job of protecting the football and sustaining drives.”
On Heading into next week's game versus Nicholls State…
“We have another opponent and we don't have any time to pout and feel sorry for ourselves. Nicholls State is going to come in here and try to beat us, and we have to prepare accordingly. I think it will be a good thing and I know that everyone is hurting about this one, especially our seniors. This will be a great opportunity for the team to bounce back and have a game where we come out and really put the pressure on ourselves to execute well.”
Senior Wide Receiver Markus Wheaton
On his team's performance...
“They (Oregon) are such a good team that you can't win if you give them handouts. We mishandled the ball a lot, me included. Like I said, they are such a good team and you can't do that against them.”
On the game's turning point...
“The punt that I let go and the couple kickoffs that we let go. They were bad plays.”
On Oregon offense...
“They are a great team with a high powered offense. We gave them a couple (turnovers) and with that team if you give them one or two it is going to get ugly quick.”
On losing the Civil War during his senior year…
“It's frustrating, but ending on a good note and winning another game is what's more important. Where our team could have gone if we won this game is in the back of my mind and it hurts.”
Senior Cornerback Jordan Poyer
On the defeat….
"I have been here four years and it is tough. We put in so much during the week and then to come out with this result is hard. But we have more football to be played and need to pull ourselves together. This one definitely hurts, though."
On whether his team was surprised by Oregon's pace and execution...
"They did everything we expected them to. Their tempo is fast and if you aren't in the right spot just once, then you will get burned. You can't give them second chances, which I think is something we struggled with."
On Oregon's running game…
"They were running sideline to sideline. When they would get the ball they would continue to push forward and take advantage of the possessions. We needed to tackle better, which we emphasized on all week, but they have two great running-backs and one great offense. In a way we showed our best defense today and the game was a lot closer than the score.”
Junior Linebacker Michael Doctor
On OSU's performance…
“Today we just started off slow. Everybody wasn't assignment sound and with a team like that if you miss one assignment they (Oregon) can go for a big run.”
On not being able to stop Oregon on fourth down…
“We knew they were going to go for those 4th downs, we just didn't execute.”
On what the game's turning point was…
“Turnovers period. As a defense we can't go out there giving them (Oregon) points like that.”
Oregon Post Game Quotes
Head Coach Chip Kelly
On the OSU Wide Receivers…
“We knew going into the game that they had two outstanding receivers in (Markus) Wheaton and (Brandin) Cooks, and that was going to be a big match up for us.”
On winning the Civil War…
“This has a huge meaning for us. For some reason the fans don't seem like they like us much when we up here (in Corvallis), but that's okay. I think our guys do a great job of blocking that out and playing against a real good team. That was a good defense we were able to run the football on and (we were) be able to keep Cooks and Wheaton at bay a little bit.”
On Oregon State's improvement from last season…
“I've always thought they were a good football team. I think Mike (Riley) does a hell of a job. Mike's a great football coach and there are some players out there that are the top players in our conference. You see them live and in person and they are as good as ever.”
Quarterback Marcus Mariota
On the atmosphere of the game…
“It was a fun atmosphere. The fans can be a little rough but the guys handled it and it is just one of those atmospheres where you want to play (in).”
On the Oregon offensive line…
“The offensive line did a great job tonight. To run over 400 yards, it's a token of what they've done. Some guys went down but others have stepped up and set off some holes. I'm proud of those guys.”
On his 42-yard touchdown run in the first quarter…
“It was a design that coach (Chip Kelly) had. They (Oregon State) came out in a look we had practiced against all week and it just so happened the offensive line opened a hole and I got to run through it.”
Running Back De'Anthony Thomas
On handling the ball…
“I felt like I did pretty well. I was just trying to get the momentum going for our team and just trying to make plays, while just trying to have fun.”
On his 29-yard touchdown run in the third quarter…
“I was just trying to get the first down for our team and then it just popped open. I tried to make the best of it.”
