OSU Wrestlers Tied for Fifth in Chicago as Meeks and Hanke Advance to Semifinals

Beavers put up 48.5 points while Meeks and Hanke each go 3-0 during the first day of competition
EVANSTON, Ill. – The Oregon State wrestling team is currently tied for fifth place following the first day of competition at the 50th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. The Beavers tallied a total of 48.5 points and are tied with Lehigh as Taylor Meeks (197 lbs.) and Chad Hanke (HWT) each went 3-0 on the day to advance to their weight classes' semifinal bracket.
Meeks, ranked No. 6 in the nation bested two straight top-15 opponents en route to his semifinal berth, while No. 4 Hanke closed out No. 5 Adam Chalfant (Indiana) via a 9-4 decision to punch his ticket to tomorrow's semis.
Jim Zalesky's squad sits 13.0 points behind first place Illinois (61.5 pts), and just one point off of Central Michigan for third.
Day No. 2 of the tournament will feature second ranked Matt Wilps of Pittsburgh squaring off against Meeks, while Hanke will take to the mats against top ranked Jarod Trice of Central Michigan.
Also wrestling on Sunday will be Mike Mangrum (141 lbs.), RJ Pena (157 lbs.) and Ty Vinson (184 lbs.), who are all still alive in the consolation brackets.
Competition of the consolation rounds, semifinals and seventh-place matches begin at 10 a.m. pacific, while the first, third and fifth-place bouts are set for 5 p.m.
