Varsity 8+ Advances To Grand Final At San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Oregon State's women's rowing team put together yet another solid performance in the early stages of its 2012 spring season, this time on the waters of Mission Bay on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic. The Beavers' first varsity 8+ qualified for the Grand Final of the SeaWorld Cal Cup on Sunday, while their second varsity 8+ and varsity 4+ qualified for the Petite Finals. OSU's novice 8+ qualified for and competed in the Petite Final on Saturday evening, finishing second.
Oregon State's first varsity 8+ of Bonnie Chilibeck (coxswain), Anna Taylor, Gillian Cooper, Leslie Urban, Amy McKee, Agne Pack, Karly Laney, Melissa Sloan and Tina Vernazza started things off for OSU at 8:20 a.m. on Saturday. The group, participating in heat `C', matched up against Iowa, St. Josephs, Grand Valley, Miami, St. Mary's and Santa Clara and won in open water, finishing in 6:47.299.
That time was the fastest of any of the 21 crews in the three Saturday heats of the SeaWorld Cal Cup and advances the Beavers to the Grand Final on Sunday at 10:20 a.m. OSU will be in lane two, racing crews from Duke, Oklahoma, San Diego, Iowa and Tulsa.
Oregon State's second varsity 8+, in a heat against Stanford, USC, Clemson, San Diego, Gonzaga and Southern Methodist, came in fourth place with a time of 7:05.37. Lin Hill (coxswain), Nicole Hook, Leslie Greer, Andrea Harvey, Ellen Pesek, Alexa Ortiz, Lauren Morgenthaler, Hilary Polis and Saasha Bruce will return to the water tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. in lane six of the Petite Final, matching up with Washington State, Texas, Clemson, Oklahoma and Tennessee.
The team's varsity 4+ will also race in the Petite Final on Sunday at 8:20 a.m. Jenna Schardt (coxswain), Katie Zimmerman, Jana Sobrosa, Kayla Laney and Beth Lewis will be in lane six, competing against British Columbia, San Diego, Virginia, Clemson and Texas. That group finished in fourth in its heat race on Saturday morning, coming across in 7:52.16.
The Beavers' novice 8+ of Hailey Page (coxswain), Demetria Thompson, Katie Low, Alissa Kummer, Kaleen Coker, Priscilla Macy, Emily Wright, Julie Stark and Staci Sherer wrapped up Oregon State's Saturday activity finishing in 7:09.69 in the Petite Final of its event to place second behind Texas. The crew came in third in its heat race earlier in the day with a time of 7:03.01.

In last season's Crew Classic, Oregon State's fastest varsity 8+ finished in 6:47.35, good enough for fifth place in the Petite Final, while the Beavers' varsity 4+ came in fifth place in the Grand Final after posting a time of 7:47.57.
The forecast in San Diego on Sunday calls for temperatures in the low 60's with winds from the west at 22 mph and a 20 percent chance of rain.
