Second-Place Finish For V8+ Highlights Day Two In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Oregon State's women's rowing team closed out the San Diego Crew Classic in fine fashion on Sunday, as the team's first varsity 8+ finished in second place in the Grand Final of the SeaWorld Cal Cup. The Beavers' second varsity 8+ and varsity 4+ also raced in the Petite Finals on Mission Bay, coming in sixth and fifth, respectively.
Pushing off at 10:20 a.m. this morning, Oregon State's first varsity 8+ of Bonnie Chilibeck (coxswain), Anna Taylor, Gillian Cooper, Leslie Urban, Amy McKee, Agne Pack, Karly Laney, Melissa Sloan and Tina Vernazza competed against crews from Duke, Oklahoma, San Diego, Iowa and Tulsa in the Grand Final of the SeaWorld Cal Cup thanks to their fast time in heat `C' on Saturday.
The group came across in 7:10.01, less than two seconds behind the Blue Devils, to finish in second place.
Both Oregon State's second varsity 8+ and varsity 4+ raced earlier in the morning in the Petite Finals of their respective events.
Matching up against the likes of Washington State, Texas, Clemson, Oklahoma and Tennessee, the 2V of Lin Hill (coxswain), Nicole Hook, Leslie Greer, Andrea Harvey, Ellen Pesek, Alexa Ortiz, Lauren Morgenthaler, Hilary Polis and Saasha Bruce came in sixth place with a time of 7:38.17.
The team's varsity 4+ of Jenna Schardt (coxswain), Katie Zimmerman, Jana Sobrosa, Kayla Laney and Beth Lewis raced in lane six against British Columbia, San Diego, Virginia, Clemson and Texas and finished in 8:30.17, good enough for fifth.
Yesterday, the Beavers' novice 8+ of Hailey Page (coxswain), Demetria Thompson, Katie Low, Alissa Kummer, Kaleen Coker, Priscilla Macy, Emily Wright, Julie Stark and Staci Sherer wrapped up Oregon State's Saturday activity finishing in 7:09.69 in the Petite Final of its event to place second behind Texas. The crew came in third in its heat race earlier in the day with a time of 7:03.01.
The Beavers will have next weekend off before they travel to Ann Arbor for the Michigan Invitational April 14 and 15.
