SPOKANE, Wash. – The Manhattan Jaspers escaped the bright lights of the big city to play in the Nike Soccer Classic at Gonzaga University. But on Sunday afternoon, they couldn't dodge the locomotive that is the Oregon State Beavers' offense. OSU won, 6-0.
Oregon State (2-0-1) scored early and often in dispatching the Jaspers. Sophomore Khiry Shelton scored in his third straight game with a goal in the third minute to make it 1-0. He found and deposited a loose ball in the box after senior Roberto Farfan's corner kick. Shelton is now one game away from tying for fourth place on the Beavers' list for consecutive games with a goal. It's happened four times, most recently with Josh Dodson in 1996. The school record is five straight games.
“Khiry holds himself to a high standard,” head coach Steve Simmons said. “The other people around him are also dangerous and they complement each other. They all benefit from each other's work.”
The benefits were abundant. Shelton set up freshman Mikhail Doholis in the 33rd minute. He sent a pass from the top of 18-yard box to the left side, and Manhattan keeper George Ellis committed early, giving Doholis an easy score to make it 2-0. Five minutes later, Jake Parker found an open Chase Raskowsky on the left side from about 12 yards out to make it 3-0.
The only thing that stopped the Beavers on Sunday was the halftime intermission.
In the 49th minute, Farfan picked up his second assist from a corner kick when senior Colin Mitchell headed home the service after a deflection off a Jasper defender to make it 4-0.
“Restarts like corner kicks are huge,” Simmons said. “For the players to be able to execute what we practice and we can taste some success off of those, it will benefit us down the road when we'll need those type of plays.”
Mike Reckmeyer joined the party in the 54th minute to give the Beavers a 5-0 lead. He headed in a floating pass from Travis Anderson to the far post from 12 yards away. Parker capped the scoring in the 69th minute with his second goal of the season on a feed from junior Daniel Van Vleet.
The Beavers outshot the Jaspers, 13-3, and 9-2 in shots on goal. Reckmeyer led the team with three shots, two on goal. The six goals are the most since the Beavers defeated Humboldt State, 10-0, in Nov. 2004.
“When you get nine guys to contribute with points and get a shutout, it was a comprehensive performance,” Simmons said. “We are going to enjoy this and get back to work.”
The Beavers head to South Bend, Ind., to face Notre Dame on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Shelton Named Offensive MVP
Oregon State sophomore Khiry Shelton was named the tournament's Offensive Most Valuable Player for his two goals and an assist over the two games played in Spokane.
