PORTLAND, Ore. - A young Oregon State lineup put together an impressive performance in its first cross country race of the season, as five Beavers finished in the top 20 at the Pier Park Invitational in Portland on Saturday morning.
Kira Kelly, a freshman running unattached, burst onto the scene with an 11th-place finish on the 5,000-meter course, crossing in 17:51.2, less than one second out of the top 10. She was followed closely by juniors Teresa Lawson and Sandra Martinez. Lawson was Oregon State's top scorer after coming in 13th in 17:55.4. Martinez, returning to the course after redshirting cross country in 2011, ran a time of 17:58.3 which was good enough for a 14th-place finish.
Kelsi Schaer and Taylor Nowlin were OSU's other top-20 finishers in the 57-runner field. Schaer, coming off of a strong freshman campaign, began her sophomore season by coming in 17th with a time of 18:12.4. Nowlin ended up 19th after running 18:20.4.
The race was scored as a four-way dual between OSU, Oregon, Portland and Portland State. The top five finishers accounted for the team dual score with the next two possibly displacing runners from opposing teams. The Beavers easily defeated the Vikings, 20-42, while coming up just short against the host Pilots, 27-29. Oregon defeated the Beavers 15-50.
A number of other Oregon State competitors scored strong debuts for the Orange and Black. Adrienne Demaree, another freshman who ran unattached, finished in 18:38.6 (22nd). Maureen Tremblay, who utilized a redshirt during the last cross country campaign, came in 24th with a time of 18:44.6. Morgan Anderson (unattached) registered a time of 19:13.8, while Raelyn Robinson, who also redshirted last fall, came in 40th (19:45.7).
The Beavers will return to action for the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational in Salem on Sept. 29.
