OSU Suffers its first conference loss, but snaps Cardinal's 590-minute, four-match shutout streak in the process
STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 12/23 ranked Oregon State women's soccer team was unable to overcome No. 2 Stanford's early charge Thursday night as the Beavers fell to the defending national champs 5-0. Stanford used three first half goals to build a commanding lead over OSU, who entered the match off to its best start in program history. With the loss Oregon State dropped to 9-2-0 and 1-1-0 in Pac-12 play, while the Cardinal improved to 8-1-1 and 2-0-0 within the conference.
Stanford got on the board early in the first half, when in just the third minute forward Chioma Ubogagu fired a shot toward OSU goalie Audrey Bernier-Larose, which deflected off of her right hand into the goal for the early 1-0 lead.
SU added to its lead in the 21st and 25th minutes with goals from Courtney Verloo and Haley Rosen. Verloo took an off-balance shot outside of the box, which sent the ball streaking toward the top of the goal beyond Bernier-Larose's reach, while Rosen's snuck into the left hand corner of the goal past a diving Bernier-Larose for the 3-0 halftime advantage.
Stanford tacked on its fourth and fifth goals of the contest within a seven minute stretch during the second half. The Cardinal scored in the 46th and 54th minutes on kicks from Nina Watkins and Mariah Nogueira.
The Beavers added their only goal of the contest in the waning minutes when freshman Gwen Bieck took corner kick from Megan Miller and swatted the ball into the back right portion of the net. For Bieck it was her first career collegiate goal and put a halt to Stanford's consecutive shutout streak which stretched over four plus matches and close to 590-total minutes.
Despite the loss, Oregon State tied Stanford in the shots department with 15-apiece. Leading the way for the `Beavs with three total shots were juniors Jenna Richardson and Brittany Held. OSU also managed six shots on goal against the two Cardinal goal keepers, while Stanford equaled the half dozen shots on net toward Bernier-Larose's direction.
Linus Rhode's crew now has two days to rest and recover before taking on Cal, Sunday afternoon in Berkeley. The Golden Bears take on Oregon Friday night before their match-up with the `Beavs. Kick-off on Sunday is slated for 1:30 pm and the match will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
POST MATCH QUOTES
Oregon State Head Coach Linus Rhode
On his team's performance...
"I think Stanford came out tonight and then were firing on all cylinders. We started flat and they took advantage of that. I do think some of those goals were our errors that we should have been sharper on but at the end of the day we have to learn from it and bounce back for our game on Sunday (against Cal)."
On the play of goalie Audrey Bernier-Larose
"I think Audrey did a fine job as she was put under a lot of pressure tonight. It's a game like this where she can learn and grow and understand what it's like to play in big games. She did make some good saves and obviously she is not happy with letting five goals in. Neither is the team or myself, so it is something we have to learn from."
On freshman Gwen Bieck scoring her first career goal against Stanford...
"Gwen finished that off really nicely. It was a very, very nice corner kick from Megan (Miller) and she put it away. I think toward the end of the game we started putting a little more pressure on the Stanford goal, so I think overall it is definitely a hard lesson to learn but we have to take the good with the bad and move on."
On moving on from the loss and focusing their attention toward California...
"We have to do it because that's the name of the game. We have to get ready for the game on Sunday and we have to learn from our errors tonight and move forward."
