SAN DIEGO - The sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team sent nine batters to the plate in a five-run seventh inning that helped the Beavers to a 8-1 win over San Diego State Thursday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
"San Diego State is a tough club that took three games against a very good San Diego team last weekend," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "We knew it would be important to come into this game with a strong effort. Dan (Child) had a good start and I'm proud of the way we battled to the end."
Tyler Smith and Danny Hayes all drove in runs during in the seventh inning, which saw the Beavers accumulate five hits after tallying just two in six innings against SDSU starter Michael Cederoth. The Beavers, though, held a 2-1 lead entering the inning due to sacrifice flies by both Michael Conforto and Jake Rodriguez in the third and sixth innings, respectively.
Ethan Miller, who relieved Cederoth to start the seventh, allowed a single to Kavin Keyes to open the inning, then threw away a throw to first on a sacrifice bunt by Andy Peterson.
Gordon made it 3-1 in favor of the Beavers (5-0 overall) on a single to left and scored when Smith, the next batter, found the gap in left for a two-run double. Smith scored when Hayes singled to center and Joey Jansen.
The runs were needed as San Diego State (3-1) inched to within one in the bottom of the sixth. SDSU loaded the bases off Child, who immediately struck out Tyler France for the first out of the inning. Max Engelbrekt then relieved Child, and got pinch hitter Steven Pallares on a 4-6 fielder's choice that netted the Aztecs a run.
Engelbrekt forced Jake Romanski to fly out to right to end the inning.
Child worked 5 1/3 innings and struck out six in 90 pitches. The righty allowed seven hits but all were singles. He picked up the win to improve to 2-0 this season.
Engelbrekt, meanwhile, was credited with a hold. He finished with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in his third appearance of the season. Thus far this season, the freshman has a win, a save and a hold.
Cederoth took the loss to drop to 1-1 this season. The right-hander worked a full six innings, scattering just two hits. He struck out six but also walked five.
Oregon State tallied nine hits by nine different players. Smith led the team with two RBI.
Brad Haynal had three hits to lead San Diego State, which finished with seven as a team but none the final 3 2/3 innings.
