CORVALLIS, Ore. - A four-run third inning provided all the offense the sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team needed Sunday in dispatching Utah, 4-1, at Goss Stadium, giving the Beavers a sweep of the Utes.
The win sent the Beavers to a 28-6 overall record, the program's best record through 34 games. Oregon State also improved to 10-2 in Pac-12 Conference play, matching the 2006 and 2011 clubs for the best league record through 12 games.
Beau Day highlighted Oregon State's four-run third with a two-run double. It gave him his third and fourth runs driven in during the three-game series and sent him to six consecutive hits, a streak that was snapped by a strikeout in the sixth inning.
The Beavers found themselves down 1-0 in the second after a run-scoring single by Wyler Smith. Oregon State, however, tied the game in the third with a single off the bat of Ryan Barnes. Day then drove in the game-winning runs before being driven in by Jerad Casper for the three-run lead.
Day and Barnes both led the Beavers with two hits as OSU managed 10 hits off three Utah pitchers.
Ben Wetzler started and was solid for the Beavers, throwing a season-high 107 pitches, going 6 1/3 innings. The lefty allowed three hits and a run while striking out eight to improve to 2-1 this season.
Tony Bryant relieved Wetzler in the seventh and worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings before Scott Schultz earned his eighth save of the season after working a perfect ninth inning.
Tanner Banks got the starting nod for Utah and worked three innings. He allowed seven hits and four runs before being replaced by Joe Pond to start the fourth. Banks took the loss and fell to 1-4 on the year.
Oregon State returns to action Wednesday when visiting Portland at 3 p.m. PT. The game was added to the calendar last week to make up the rained out game from March 5. Live stats can be found on osubeavers.com but no live video will be available.
