CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's soccer team continued its impressive spring campaign with a 3-0 victory over the Portland Timbers U-23s squad this morning at Lorenz Field. It's the Beavers' fourth shutout in four spring games. Two of the Oregon State's three goals came from newcomers as the team mixed and matched lineups and combinations throughout the match.
Forward Borce Atanasov scored the eventual game-winner when he gave the Beavers a 1-0 advantage late in the first half with a helper from Khiry Shelton. Atanasov came to Oregon State from Clark College in Vancouver, Wash., where his scoring numbers exploded. He scored 42 goals and added 16 assists in two seasons to earn NWAACC Player of the Year honors while leading the league in goals in 2012.
Later in the half, Shelton deposited one of his own to make it 2-0 on a pass from Daniel Van Vleet fed Ole Sandnes after a crossbar rebound from a Mikhail Doholis header.
"Ole brings discipline and maturity to our central midfield," Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said on signing day in February. "He's a box-to-box type midfielder who is tough in the tackle, clean on the ball and has good vision."
Simmons was also highly impressed with his side's energy and ball possession in the decisive second half as the Beavers created more scoring opportunities.
“I thought it took us a while to get going and move the ball like we're able,” he said. “Overall, it was a satisfying score line considering the mixed lineups and some experimentation. This will give us plenty to work on this coming week.”
The spring season wraps up next weekend when OSU plays the Timbers Reserves on Friday at the Timbers Training Center at 6:00 p.m. The game is closed to the general public. The Beavers then return home to Lorenz Field next Sunday to host Seattle University at noon.
