CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ben Wetzler scattered six hits and a run in eight innings to help send the seventh-ranked Oregon State baseball team to its first ever three-game sweep of USC with a 6-1 win Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
Michael Conforto and Andy Peterson each had two hits and Dylan Davis drove in two runs for the Beavers, who swept USC for just the second time as the 1952 club downed the Trojans in a two-game series.
It was the Beavers' third Pac-12 Conference sweep of the season and helped OSU improve its overall record to 34-8 this season while the team's league mark is 14-4. USC, meanwhile, is at 16-26 overall and 8-13 in Pac-12 play.
"This was a great weekend for us," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "We had three great outings from our starting staff and our offense was excellent."
Wetzler threw 101 pitches and his only blemish came in the fourth when James Roberts hit a solo home run to left. He did not walk a batter and improved to 4-1 on the year.
The Oregon State pitching staff - consisting of Wetzler, Matt Boyd, Brandon Jackson, Tony Bryant and Scott Schultz - combined to limit USC to 17 hits, four runs and two walks with 18 strikeouts in the three-game sweep.
Oregon State tacked on two in the first and one more in the second to take the early advantage. Beau Day drove in runs in the first, with Andy Peterson driving in the game's third run with a sacrifice fly in the second.
USC's James Roberts put the Trojans on the board with a solo home run in the fourth but the Beavers answered with two more runs in the fifth. Ryan Barnes, who flew out to the warning track in left for the sacrifice fly.
Davis drove home his second run of the game on a sac fly in the seventh.
The Beavers jumped out to the early lead against USC starter Kyle Twomey and knocked him out of the game after reaching in their first three at bats of the fifth inning. Davis doubled home Peterson for Oregon State's sixth and final hit against the lefty, and he took the loss to fall to 2-5 this season. Twomey walked four and struck out three.
