SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 12 Oregon State gymnastics team posted another big road score as the Beavers downed Washington and Seattle Pacific with a score of 196.250 at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle. Freshman Madeline Gardiner's 39.300 in the all-around and fellow frosh Kaytianna McMillan's return to the bars and beam lineups led the way.
Oregon State topped the 49-point plateau on three events and moved its record to 11-3.
“This was a short week and the team had a some great performances,” head coach Tanya Chaplin. “However, we weren't perfect and had a few mistakes. We will now focus our energy on having a successful finals week and preparation in the gym for the Conference Championship.”
The Beavers got out to a strong start tying their season-high of 49.225 on the uneven bars. The return of Kaytianna McMillan boosted the Beavers' lineup and she promptly went out and nailed a career-high 9.875. Erika Aufiero matched McMillan's 9.875 while Brittany Harris and Hannah Casey each notched routines that scored 9.85.
Oregon State followed with a solid second rotation on the balance beam scoring 49.125 led by Madeline Gardiner who scored 9.90. McMillan added a 9.85 and Harris and Tang each scored 9.825.
The Beavers reached the halfway mark ahead 98.350 to Washington's 97.875 and SPU's 95.950. Moving to floor exercise, OSU hit a couple bumps having to count a fall. However, Kailie Ponto's 9.875 in the second competition performance of her career was good for second place on the event. In addition, matching scores of 9.85 from Tang and Cerise Witherby helped offset the mistakes.
Looking to finish strong in the final rotation, OSU nailed six straight vaults just missing a season-high to score 49.250. Career-best vaults from Gardiner (9.85), Megan Jimenez (9.825) and Aufiero (9.90) aided the effort. Taylor Keeker added a 9.85 of her own and Harris scored 9.825.
Oregon State travels to Berkeley, Calif. with eyes on defending their conference title at the Pac-12 Championships, Sat., Mar. 22.
