Beavers Sweep Sooners at Pac-12 Challenge
March 29, 2015 | Women's Rowing
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The Oregon State women's rowing team swept Oklahoma at the Pac-12 Challenge Saturday afternoon. It was a strong bounce back performance after a tough morning of racing against Virginia.
“All of the crews learned a lot in the morning races and were able to come back in the afternoon and put together improved races,” head coach Emily Ford said.
In morning racing it was the Second Varsity 8, crewed by Mimi Grosselius, Mikaela Kramer, Katie Low, Breanna Burns, Kyrie Miller, Isabella Preble, Theresa O'Leary and Julie Stark and coxed by Arcata Leavitt that provided the highlight for the Beavers. The OSU boat fought a second-ranked Virginia crew coming in with a time of 6-minutes, 41.6-seconds, just four seconds behind the Cavaliers' time of 6:37.6.
“That crew fought like crazy against a very strong Virginia boat,” Ford said. “It's a scrappy crew and they showed up big this morning.”
The 2V8 came back in the afternoon to post the Beavers' biggest win of the day defeating Oklahoma's second boat by 16-seconds, 6:39.0 to 6:55.3.
Oregon State's Varsity 8, directed by Simone Oberholzer and powered by Anna Taylor, Jessica Stewart, Emily Wright, Bayly Camp, Paige Phillips, Lauren Still, Chen Oshri and Saasha Bruce, split its two races. The Beavers fell the No. 2 crew in the nation 6:30.0 to 6:43.5 in the morning but bounced back against Oklahoma to win in the afternoon 6:36.3 to 6:45.2.
The Beavers' Varsity 4+, consisting of Lindsay Taylor, Olivia Ashby, Alissa Kummer and Lihani du Plessis and coxed by Haley Page, provided the excitement in afternoon racing out-sprinting the Sooners to the finish to capture victory 7:36.4 to 7:38.8. The V4+ lost to Virginia in morning racing.
“The V4 had a barn-burner of a race and essentially won it in the spring,” Ford said. “They showed a great fighting spirit out there!”
OSU's Second Varsity 4+, which included Natalie Sarff, Sara Dunagan, Alyssa Beamer and Anna Peterson and coxed by Jayme Richardson, was beaten twice by crews from California.
Oregon State is back on the water next Saturday, April 4, to host the Oregon State Classic at Dexter Lake where OSU will host Louisville, Minnesota, Oregon, Stanford and Washington.
