Beavers Drop to Undefeated Bulldogs
September 11, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Akron, Ohio – The Oregon State men's soccer team was unable to earn a result against undefeated No. 19 Butler Sunday morning, as the Bulldogs took a 3-0 victory in Akron, Ohio.
"We really never got going this weekend, and didn't play the complete matches like we know we can," said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. "We had pockets of good play, but there needs to be more consistency."
The Beavers (3-2-1) recorded seven shots in the match, including four on goal. Junior Timmy Mueller led the way with three attempts.
Scoring chances proved hard to come-by in the opening 15 minutes. Sophomore Don Tchilao tallied the Beavers' first shot in the fourth minute, but Butler got the game's opening goalÂÂÂ, finding the net in the 19th minute to go in front.
Sophomore Nathan Braaten came close to equalizing in the 37th minute, but his shot was cleared off the line by a Butler (4-0-1) defender. The Bulldogs would respond just two minutes later, flicking the ball into the goal to take a 2-0 edge. Mueller got a pair of chances in the closing minutes of the period, but could not cut into the advantage before the break.
Senior Matt Arbogast forced a save from the Butler keeper in the 59th minute, as the Beavers looked to make a second-half push. Junior Jordan Jones followed that up by testing the goalie in the 76th, but his attempt was saved. Oregon State made a late push to cut into the lead, but the Bulldogs were able to seal the victory with an 88th minute tally.
The Beavers will hit the road again next weekend, as they head down to Las Vegas for a matchup with UNLV. That game is slated to kick off at 7 p.m. PT on Saturday evening.
