Late Goals Lift Beavers Over UNLV
September 17, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Las Vegas, Nev. – The Oregon State men's soccer team came up with a pair of late goals to take a 2-0 win over UNLV Saturday evening in Las Vegas, Nev.
Both tallies came from transfers, as junior Jaime Miralles found the net in the 81st minute, before fellow junior Jesse Garcia doubled the advantage less than a minute later.
"We played this road game well," said Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons. "We did a good job of dealing with the excitement of a large crowd and high initial excitement from UNLV. As the game went on, I thought we grew stronger. That was evident with the late goals while still keeping a clean sheet. Credit to the guys for their steadiness tonight."
Miralles' goal came with the Beavers firmly on the front-foot. The midfielder took a pass from junior Jordan Jones, and proceeded to curl a shot around the keeper. Garcia would follow that up by hitting the target from 18 yards out on a feed from freshman David Norman Jr.
Oregon State was able to create numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match. The first chance of the game fell to Jones, as the junior headed the ball over the bar off a cross from Don Tchilao. It was again Tchilao orchestrating the attack in the 22nd minute, as the sophomore set up a shot for Norman that sailed over the net.
Oregon State looked like it had taken the lead in the 33rd minute when sophomore Alex Segovia put the ball in the net, but the play was flagged offside.
Tchilao would hit the post in the 68th minute, narrowly missing his chance to put the Beavers in front. It would not take much longer for Oregon State to get the breakthrough from there, as it scored two goals in a 60-second span to take the victory.
Overall, Oregon State took nine shots in the match, placing five on goal.
The Beavers will be back at Paul Lorenz Field on Thursday, as they take on UC Irvine in at noon.
