Manuel Scores Career-High 20 Against WSU
January 04, 2017 | Men's Basketball
SPOKANE, Wash. – Oregon State redshirt freshman guard Kendal Manuel scored a career-high 20 points on Wednesday night to lead the Beavers in a 75-62 loss to Washington State at Spokane Arena.
Manuel made a career-best six 3-pointers in nine attempts and added three assists but it wasn't enough to prevent OSU (4-12, 0-3 Pac-12) from dropping its third consecutive Pac-12 Conference game. His previous bests were 18 points against Savannah State on Dec. 11, and five 3-pointers at Charlotte on Dec. 3.
Sophomore center Drew Eubanks added 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals and just missed his fifth career double-double. Sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr. had 13 points and seven assists and freshman guard JaQuori McLaughlin added 10 points.
WSU (9-5, 2-0) closed the game on a 17-3 run over the final seven minutes to snap OSU's six-game winning streak in the series.
The Beavers took their final lead at 59-58 on a layup by Thompson Jr. with 7:03 to play. However, he missed the and-1 free throw and OSU would not score again until McLaughlin made 1 of 2 free throws with exactly two minutes to play.
That ended a streak of 12 unanswered WSU points that enabled the Cougars to take an insurmountable 70-60 advantage. McLaughlin's basket with three seconds left was OSU's lone bucket in the final 7:03.
Poor free-throw shooting was instrumental in the loss. OSU was 4-of-13 from the line while the Cougars were 14 of 15. WSU outrebounded OSU 33-27.
The Beavers scored the final five points of the first half to trim what had been a 10-point lead to 38-33. Eubanks had 12 points and five rebounds, and Manuel hit three 3-pointers in the final 5:10 to finish the first frame with nine points.
WSU used an 11-0 run to take a 25-16 advantage with 7:40 left in the first half. The Cougars stretched the edge to 10 points at 38-28 before the Beavers cut that in half with five points in the final 1:10.
OSU opened the second half with a 10-4 run and took the lead 43-42 on a 3-pointer by Manuel with 17:21 remaining. It was a see-saw game from that point on until WSU pulled away in the final seven minutes.
The Beavers resume Pac-12 action on Saturday against Washington at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle. Tipoff is set for noon; it will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
