Beavers Go to 6-0 with Four Set Win Over Portland
September 02, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team's outstanding early season play continued Saturday night with a win over Portland. The victory secured the Beavers' second tournament title in as many weeks after winning their own Beaver State Classic last weekend.
Â
Oregon State improves to 6-0 for the first time since 2014, dealing the Pilots (5-1) their first loss of the season in four sets by scores of 25-21, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-17.
Â
"This is the best team we've played so far," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We really didn't want what happened last year to happen again – winning the first two sets before dropping the match. I think though we wore them down in the fourth set and got up on them and wouldn't let them back in it."
Â
For the second time on Saturday, Oregon State jumped out to an early lead in the first set, taking a 10-3 lead as Mary-Kate Marshall converted three kills in the initial push. The Pilots would close the gap as the set went on, but the Beavers surged again to score six of the final eight points to take the opening set 25-21.
Â
The second set was a battle with neither team able to put together a run of any sort and the score was knotted as late as 19-19. A pair of kills from Lanesha Reagan as well as a Kylee McLaughlin score gave the Beavers a 23-21 advantage and OSU was able to hang on to take the set 25-23.
Â
The Pilots came out of the intermission firing bullets and took an early 10-5 lead. But Oregon State wouldn't go down without a fight. The Beavers came back to take the lead at 16-15 on another kill from Reagan, however she was injured on the play and left the game. The teams continued their back-and-forth affair with UP coming out on top to take the third set 25-23.
Â
Oregon State rolled early in the fourth set behind a balanced offense with Kory Cheshire, Maddie Goings and Marshall registering kills and forced the Pilots to use both timeouts with OSU leading 13-6. The Beavers never looked back dominating the deciding set 25-17 to win the match.
Â
"Kylee (McLaughlin) had a great match. Her setting was a little off late, but she played really well all-around. Â Mary-Kate played really well too and came up with some big swings for us late in the game."
McLaughlin and Haylie Bennett earned all-tournament honors and Marshall was named the tourney MVP.
Â
Game Notes: Oregon State avenged a 3-2 loss to the Pilots last season with tonight's victory. OSU now leads the all-time series 42-8 … Freshman setter Kylee McLaughlin recorded a triple-double with 49 assists, 11 digs and a career-best 10 blocks … Mary-Kate Marshall matched the Beavers' season-best with 19 kills against Pilots … Maddy Gravley tallied a career-tying eight blocks … OSU registered a season-high 18 blocks.
Â
Next Up: OSU travels to Denton, Texas next weekend to face host North Texas, Campbell and New Orleans.
