February 22, 2019 | Women's Track & Field
SEATTLE – Highlighted by Ann Wingeleth's record-setting performance, the Oregon State track and field team wrapped up the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Seattle at the Dempsey Indoor Center.
After the first day of events, the Beavers currently sit in 13th place with 10 team points. USC leads all women's teams with 31 points.
"It was an exciting day for us, we are really starting to make progress as an entire group," began head coach Louie Quintana. "We scored in four different events which is emphasizing our diverse group."
Wingeleth was the only entrant in the long jump for the Beavers, who held the No. 2 all-time spot at Oregon State entering Friday. Wingeleth achieved two jumps of 19-feet, 6-inches on her second and third attempts finishing in 5th place overall securing four team points for the Beavers.
"Ann looked great and was jumping with a lot of confidence," said Quintana.
Oregon State secured four more team points from Brigette Takeuchi thanks to her performance in the 5,000 meters. Takeuchi placed 5th overall out of 23 entrants, finishing the 5K in 17:02.11; her time vaults her up to No. 4 on the OSU all-time list. Freshman Haley Wolf was the only other entrant in the event finishing in 14th place (17:23.69), giving her the No. 5 spot on the all-time leaderboards.
"Brigette ran a steady race to get 5th," said Quintana. "Haley Wolf was sitting in 4th with 1,200 meters to go and struggled home, but I was proud of her for going for the win."
Saskia McNairy and the Distance Medley Relay Team gave the Beavers one point each towards the team total. McNairy scored a personal best 3,668 points in the pentathlon, while the DMR team, comprised of Mari Friedman, Tarisa Olinski, Rebecca Ledsham and Lexi Reed, secured the other point with an 8th place finish, 11:28.64; the finishing time is the second-best in OSU history.
"Saskia and Claire had such a great day in the pentathlon," said Quintana. "Both had personal record days, and Saskia ended up scoring for us which is fantastic."
The Beavers had a pair of all-time marks set in the weight throw thanks to Keely McLaughlin and Jessica Molina. McLaughlin placed second in her heat and 12th overall, with the second-best throw in Oregon State's history, 54-feet, 9.5-inches. Jessica Molina improved her previous all-time mark to 50-feet, 8.25-inches.
Lauren Miller was the Beavers only entrant into the 60 meters. Miller's time of 7.84 is the fourth fastest in Oregon State history in the event, and earned her a fourth place finish in her heat.
"We scored 10 points tonight with one day to go," said Quintana. "Our school record is 14 total team points at this MPSF meet. We have the chance to get that tomorrow."
