No. 15 Beavers Win in Home Opener
January 11, 2020 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State gymnastics team, ranked No. 15 entering the weekend, earned wins over Seattle Pacific and Centenary in dominating fashion Saturday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers, who weren't sharp through the first two events, turned it on in the second half of the meet posting their first scores of 49-points of the season. The wins drive the Beavers' record to 4-1 early in the 2020 season.
Halli Briscoe, Isis Lowery and Kaitlyn Yanish won an event title and Lowery and Yanish shared the floor title.
The Beavers posted the top team score on each event – vault, 48.850; uneven bars, 48.325; balance bean, 49.000; and floor exercise, 49.150.
"I thought it was a positive sign that the team was able to focus and leave the mistakes of the first half of the meet behind. The second half was like a completely different meet," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We have a lot of work to do especially focusing on landings. We left a lot of tenths out there just on not sticking our dismounts. We need to be aggressive yet relaxed and not try to over-do things."
Starting the meet on the vault, the Beavers took control of the meet quickly posting a team score of 48.850. Yanish registered a 9.850 to win the event while Lacy Dagen posted a 9.825 to take second. Madi Dagen added a 9.80 to tie for third in the meet.
Leading by nearly a full point after the opening rotation, the Beavers moved to the bars. Though the team had a couple hiccups in the middle of the bars rotation, Briscoe performed a beautiful set to snatch the event title with a score of 9.85. Alyssa Minyard performed a solid routine netting a 9.775 for the second straight week and Colette Yamaoka posted a 9.725 in the leadoff role to tie for third on the event.
OSU re-gathered itself for the latter half of the meet beginning on the beam where the squad reached the 49-point mark for the first time in 2020. Lowery earned a score of 9.875 while fellow senior Maela Lazaro rebounded from last week's fall to notch a score of 9.850 from the anchor spot. Madi Dagen once again grabbed a third-place finish with a score of 9.825.
"We needed to make a change in the beam lineup and I was really pleased with the way the freshmen (Kayla Bird and Jenna Domingo) stepped up and were ready to go. Today I opted to give Jenna the opportunity and she did a fantastic job in a spot that isn't always easy to fill."
The Beavers delivered during the final rotation, which they refer to as show time when they take the floor exercise. Leading off Kristina Peterson scored 9.750 in the first competitive floor routine of her career. Lowery and Yanish, who finish the event for the Beavers, posted matching scores of 9.925 to tie for the meet's high score and Savanna Force recorded a 9.850 for third.
Freshman Jenna Domingo made her official college debut filling in on the beam at the last moment, scoring 9.60.
Oregon State goes on the road the next two weeks to face Sacramento State and Arizona in Sacramento on Friday, Jan. 17, and then to Tucson, Ariz. for a rematch with the Wildcats to begin the Pac-12 season on Saturday, Jan. 25.
