
Beavers Drop Contest to Sun Devils

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's basketball team came up just short in the closing seconds, as Arizona State took a 74-69 win Saturday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
Oregon State led by as many as 16 in the contest as it attempted to hand ASU its second Pac-12 loss of the season. The Beavers started four freshmen in the contest, including the first career starts for Tyler Bilodeau and Jayden Stevens.
Michael Rataj finished with 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the floor, to go along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Glenn Taylor Jr. tallied 13 points, while Bilodeau and Jordan Pope had nine points and five rebounds apiece.
Stevens scored six points in his start, while Dzmitry Ryuny pulled down four rebounds off the bench.
As a team, the Beavers shot 42.9 percent from the floor, including a 55.2 percent mark in the first half.
Oregon State's defense clamped down early, holding the Sun Devils without a made field goal for the opening four minutes of the game to head to the contest's first media timeout in front 6-5. The Beavers proceeded to hold ASU scoreless for a stretch of over five minutes, scoring 11 unanswered points to open up a 12-point lead mid-way through the opening half.
Oregon State would extend the advantage to 16 in the first half, before heading to the break in front 42-39.
Rataj led the Beavers with 12 first-half points.
The Sun Devils were able to level the score within the first five minutes of the second half, before taking the lead for the first time with 13 minutes to go. Arizona State led by eight with 2:37 on the clock, but the Beavers exploded with a 7-0 run to get within one with 1:15 to go. Oregon State had one final chance down three with seconds left on the clock, but was unable to even the score as the Sun Devils took the win by five.
The Beavers will head to the Bay Area next week, beginning Thursday with a game at Stanford.
