
UCLA Outlasts Beavers in Five

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Fighting back from a 1-2 deficit, the Oregon State volleyball team clawed back but fell in five sets to UCLA on Wednesday afternoon.
UCLA took the match with a 25-14, 22-25, 25-27, 25-18, 12-15 scoreline.
Amanda Burns helped on both ends as she registered her ninth double-double of the season with 32 digs and 19 assists. Elizabeth Schuster helped the offense with 29 assists while Ryan White was one shy of a double-double as she dug out 17 times. Mychael Vernon paced the offensive effort with 24 kills and even put up 15 digs. Three other Beavs – Lauren Rumel (14), Megan Sheridan (14) and Peyton Suess (11) – put up double-figures in kills. Rumel's output on the day matched a career-high that was first set back in September in Portland.
Combing for a .556 clip, the Beavers saw the offense hum to a 11-point win in the opener at 25-14, highlighted by seven Burns assists. Vernon kickstarted her big day with four kills while Sheridan matched the effort with four herself. Three – Schuster, Suess and White – put up aces and helped give the Beavers multiple 4-0 runs to strike first. Going along with her seven helpers, Burns paced the defense with a set-best six digs.
UCLA evened things with a set two win after using a late spurt for the 25-22 set win. Taking the lead at 15-14, the Bruins did not look back as they outscored OSU 10-8 down the stretch for the set victory. UCLA took advantage of three Beaver attack errors, including on the set-clincher at 25-22. The Beavers were limited to just a .167 hitting percentage in the set but Vernon led with six kills and Schuster contributed seven assists. White led the defense with five digs while Burns, Suess and Vernon each added three.
The third was another back-and-forth set in which the difference was not made until late and saw numerous 3-0 runs for both teams. Putting the Beavers on the brink of elimination, UCLA staved off an OSU set point at 25-24 and took the next three to flip the match's momentum in their favor. Burns and Schuster combined for 19 assists – 10 and 9, respectively – while Rumel and Vernon each tallied five kills while Vernon and White each put up five digs.
Oregon State battled and sent it to a fifth set with a seven-point fourth set win. After UCLA took the set's second point to make it 1-1, the Beavs then led for the rest of the frame as they took it 25-18. The Beavers needed just two set points to even things and clinched the set when UCLA's Cheridyn Leverette committed a service error. Up by just three at 13-10, White recorded just her fourth kill of the season when she finished off a rally to gain a four-point cushion. Vernon posted a five kill-five dig performance in the set as the Beavs hit .562.
The Beavers could not hold onto numerous early two-point leads as UCLA outlasted Oregon State in the pivotal fifth set. Leading 7-6 after a Burns kill, the Bruins stormed back to take the set with an 8-5 run. Vernon posted four kills in the set while White added four digs.
Year One of the Behonick era will close with the Rivalry Series on Saturday, November 25. The Beavers and Ducks are set for a 2 p.m. start that can be seen on Pac-12 Networks.
