Beavers Finish Fifth at Cliff Keen, Wittlake Takes Second at 174
December 02, 2023 | Wrestling
LAS VEGAS – Completing action in the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, the 17th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team finished with a fifth-place result, collecting 98.5 points. Travis Wittlake – ranked 12th at 174 lbs. – highlighted the OSU squad with a second-place finish while Brandon Kaylor (125) and Boone McDermott (HWT) each had a fourth-place performance.
The fifth-place finish was the best team performance by an OSU squad in the Pendleton era and best since the 2012 edition, when they also placed fourth.
Wittlake used a pair of comebacks to win a thriller over 30th-ranked Danny Wask of Navy by decision at 9-8 in the semifinals. The Coos Bay native battled back from a 3-0 hole early and escaped in the last seconds to clinch a spot in the final. He narrowly fell by decision in a 9-7 bout to seventh-ranked Cade DeVos in the championship.
21st-ranked Kaylor opened Saturday on a strong note as he picked up a ranked win by major decision over No. 16 Tanner Jordan of South Dakota State by a 12-4 margin to move onto the consolation semis. He split his last two bouts of the event – both against ranked foes – to seal his fourth-place finish after falling in sudden victory in the third-place bout.
Nash Singleton (149) went 1-2, including a win by MFF from No. 6 Jackson Arrington – to take the competition's sixth place. His day closed with a pair of defeats via major decision against opposition inside the top 10.
Eighth-ranked Matthew Olguin (165) secured sixth after splitting major decisions in his two bouts. After falling by a 10-2 margin in the consolation semifinals, he put up a 13-0 win over No. 21 Brevin Cassella of Binghamton to cap his time in Las Vegas.
McDermott could not rattle off six consecutive wins to take third place as he fell by major decision in the third-place bout to 15th-ranked Taye Ghadiali of Campbell to close out the event. In all, he defeated three consecutive ranked opponents to get to his final bout before falling short.
The Beavs will close 2023 and start their Pac-12 title defense when they start league play at Cal State Bakersfield on December 16. Action against the Roadrunners is slated for a 7 p.m. start in Bakersfield.
