Beavers Bring Home Three All-America Honors
March 11, 2023 | Women's Track & Field
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Kaylee Mitchell and Grace Fetherstonhaugh combined for three more All-America honors on Friday and Saturday at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships.
Â
Mitchell earned second-team All-American honors in both the mile and 3,000 meters while Fetherstonhaugh also made the second team in the 3,000.
Â
The duo became the first two four-time indoor All-Americans in school history and own eight of Oregon State's 11 indoor All-American honors. Fetherstonhaugh is the Beaver to earn indoor All-America honors in three consecutive years.
Â
"I'm proud of Grace and Kaylee. We are at a point now where our expectations are very high. You have to be at your very best at this meet - it's the greatest meet in the world and they are part of it. Unfortunately, both got a cold this week and had to battle under less than ideal circumstances. They are fit, just unfortunate timing. But they didn't let that interrupt their approach and focus. They raced with integrity and tenacity. That's what we want in this program. Some days you are not going to feel your best, but you always have to bet on yourself to have a great day. They never gave up and for that they are champions in my book," head coach Louie Quintana said.
Â
Mitchell led off the weekend with the mile prelims on Friday. Her 4:42.36 effort was just .26 seconds off qualifying for the finals behind Virginia's Margot Appleton, who finished fourth in the first heat. The time placed 12th overall.
Â
On Saturday, Fetherstonhaugh and Mitchell competed together in the 3.000 meters, placing 12th and 10th, respectively. Fetherstonhaugh had two fast splits in the race, leading all runners between 800 and 1,000 meters as well as 1,800 and 2,000 meters.
