Beavs Record 11 Top-10 Times, Set New Discus Record at Oregon Preview
March 18, 2023 | Women's Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Jade Whitfield highlighted a strong start to the 2023 outdoor track and field season by outpacing the previous school record in the discus by nearly six feet at Saturday's Oregon Preview.
Â
The redshirt sophomore's 182-foot, 9-inch toss outpaced her previous PR by more than 14 feet and gave her one of Oregon State's six wins on the day.
Â
"We had such a great opener. A lot of positive energy. I feel like we took advantage of a great day of weather and maximized our opportunities. Jade Whitfield had a career day in the discus with a school record and a mark that will easily qualify for the first round of the NCAA, which was great to see," head coach Louie Quintana said. "We also had brilliant days from Ella Knott, Dede Norman and Markayla Billings as each achieved marks in their respective events that historically qualifies for the NCAA first round. We also had several event winners across all disciplines, which made it a fun day and great start to the outdoor season."
Whitfield was one of several Beaver throwers to have a strong day. Markayla Billings placed second in the hammer throw with the no. 3 mark in school history: 58.10m/190-7. The toss was a 10-foot, 10-inch improvement for Billings.
Ella Knott also improved an OSU Top-10 mark with a 46.67m/153-01 in her first javelin throw of the season, going on to finish second. Keely McLaughlin won the shot put (14.63/48-0) and placed fifth in the discus (46.37m/152-1) while Taylor Crockem completed a 1-2 finish in the shot put for the Beavs with a 14.62m/47-11.75 toss.
The field events closed a good day with the high jump, which saw freshman DeDe Norman make her debut with a runner-up result. Her 1.75m/5-8.75 leap is tied for ninth all time.
Â
On the track, Oregon State highlighted an outstanding day with two top-10 times in the 4x100 meter relay and a 1-2 finish. The 'A' relay of Taylor Weidinger, Ava Gross, Abby Buckley and Treasure Rinaldi won with a 47.11 while Chelsea Howard, Jada Hurley, Kylee Nelson, Delaney Bahn combined for a 47.25 and second place.
Â
Hurley and Adael Scatena each won individual events on the track. Hurley took the 100-meter title with a 12.19 while Scatena ran the second-best 400 meters in school history with a 55.32. Weidinger was the runner up in the 400 and her 56.93 ranks eighth all-time at OSU.
Â
The distance squad opened and closed the day on the track. Christina Geisler ran a personal best of 4:28.50 to finish second in the 1,500 meters before Eimy Martinez dominated the 3,000 meters with a 9:48.61 mark in the 3,000, the sixth best time in school history, while earning the win.
