Chayse Gomez Leads Beavers On Day One At NCAA Championships

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Chayse Gomez carded a 1-under 71 to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the opening round of the NCAA National Championships on Friday.
The Beavers shot a 9-over 297 at the par-72, 6,383-yard Grayhawk Golf Club and are in 22nd place with two rounds to play before the field is cut to 15 teams.
The top 15 of the 30 teams competing after Sunday's round will play an additional 18 holes on Monday to determine the eight teams that will advance to match play. The top nine individuals not on an advancing team after 54 holes will also play 18 more holes on Monday to determine the 72-hole individual stroke play champion.

The Beavers will be in the afternoon wave in Saturday's second round and start at 1:20 p.m. off the first tee with North Carolina State and Augusta. The morning wave will begin at 6:10 a.m. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Gomez continued her strong play from the NCAA Westfield Regional and led the team with a 1-under 71 in the first round of the NCAA Championships. She had a team-tying best four birdies, including three on the second nine that helped her finish in red figures. Gomez shot a three-round career-best 6-under 210 and finished in a tie for seventh place at the NCAA Regionals in Westfield, Ind.
Danique Stokmans equaled Gomez with a team-best four birdies and finished the first round with a 2-over 74. She was even par with two birdies and two bogeys in the opening nine, but took an unfortunate double-bogey on the second nine to go with two more birdies and two bogeys.
Madde Sund started the day bogey-bogey but reeled off birdies on three of the next four holes that helped her shoot a 1-under 35 on the opening nine. She was 1 under through 13 holes but finished the day with two bogeys and a double for a score of 3-over 75.
After opening the morning with a birdie, Amanda Minni took a triple-bogey on the par-5 11th hole and three bogeys to finish the first nine. She didn't panic and played even golf the rest of the way with two birdies and two bogeys to close the round with a 5-over 77.
True freshman Kyra Ly was solid on her first nine holes of the day with two birdies, six pars and one bogey for 1-under 35. She ran into trouble on the back nine with a triple-bogey, a double and three bogeys to go with one birdie to finish the round with a 6-over 78.
