Late Comeback Falls Short in One-Possession Game
October 19, 2024 | Football
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State's comeback attempt fell short as Gevani McCoy's last-second pass fell incomplete in the end zone as the Beavers dropped a 33-25 decision to UNLV on Saturday night.
Trailing by as many as 16 late in the fourth quarter, the Beavers (4-3) used a 75-yard touchdown drive in just 2:39 to trim to the lead to eight after Anthony Hankerson charged into the endzone and Jermaine Terry II hauled in the two-point conversion to make it 33-25. After forcing the Rebels to a three-and-out, the Beavers' last-ditch effort to force overtime fell short as the clock hit zeros.
McCoy led the Beavers through the air and on the ground, totaling 231 and 81, respectively. Using his feet, he found the endzone twice – including a 71-yard keeper for a touchdown in the late stages of the second frame. He went 21-of-37 through the air for 231 yards. Trent Walker led the receiving corps with 88 yards on nine receptions.
Isaiah Chishom and Nikko Taylor led the defense with near-identical stats: 8.0 total tackles and three solo stops apiece. Taylor complemented the stops with 0.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and three quarterback hurries. Jack Kane recorded his second interception of the season in the fourth quarter.
Despite Oregon State holding a 17-6 lead late in the second quarter, UNLV rattled off 27 unanswered points to take the lead before the Beavers' late fourth quarter touchdown.
UNLV held Oregon State to just 368 yards of total offense, more than 100 yards under their average this season. On the ground, the Beavers were limited to 137 yards, nearly 120 fewer than average.
Oregon State will be back in action next week – October 26 - to take on California. Kickoff from Berkeley is set for 1 p.m. and can be seen nationally on ESPN2.
