Beavers Defeat No. 11 Santa Clara on Senior Day
November 02, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Katie Godden and Paola Figueroa scored in a convincing victory over the No. 11 Santa Clara Broncos on Saturday as Oregon State women's soccer claimed a 2-1 win at Paul Lorenz Field.
For Oregon State (7-7-2, 5-1-2 WCC), Saturday's victory over the 11th- ranked Broncos was the team's first win over a ranked opponent since a 2-1 road win over No. 7 Stanford on Sept. 30, 2021. After playing then-ranked No. 20 Pepperdine to a 1-1 draw in the last game, Saturday's win also marked the first time since the 2012 season that Beaver women's soccer claimed points against a ranked opponent in consecutive games.
The victory puts OSU back in a three-way tie for first place in the conference with just two games remaining in the regular season. Oregon State is level with Santa Clara and Pepperdine and now holds the tiebreaker over SCU.
Santa Clara (11-3-3, 5-1-2 WCC) found an early goal after a corner kick was directed in off the knee of a Beaver, but that advantage didn't last long, as a pair of seniors connected just 10 minutes later; Carly Carraher played a beautiful ball in for Katie Godden, who headed it to the far post in the 27th minute to tie the game at one.
Godden's goal was her second this season and first since scoring in a 4-2 win over Gonzaga on Sept. 28, while the two points bring her season total to seven. Carraher's assist was the latest in a run of fantastic form for the Portland native, as it was her second helper in as many games and the third time in the last four games that she has either scored or assisted.
Paola Figueroa dealt the lethal blow after a mistake by the Bronco defense in the 68th minute.
Aidan Brown ran in behind the Bronco defense and forced a clearance, but the low ball was played right to the feet of Figueroa, who hit it in one-time from outside the box after the Bronco goalkeeper came off her line to put Oregon State ahead, 2-1.
Already the team-leader in assists with four, Figueroa's goal was her first as a Beaver and put an exclamation point on a tremendous junior season that has featured 14 starts across all 16 games. All six of her points this season have come during conference play.
Not to be outdone by her teammates, Mya Sanchez set a new personal best for saves in a single game, stopping nine shots and posting a save percentage of 90.0, bringing her season total to 83 saves while stopping 77.6% of the shots she's faced.
The Beavers have just two games remaining in the regular season, facing Washington State (Nov. 6, 7 p.m.) and Portland (Nov. 9, 7 p.m.) next week.
